Oral Surgeon
updated: Jul 31, 2012, 12:39 PM

I would appreciate reader feedback on local oral surgeons to remove my son's wisdom teeth. So far, his dentist has recommended dr. Eric Wallace or Dr. Mark Beinstock if anyone has info on them (or any other suggestions!). We'd like someone who is technically good as well as reasonably priced if possible since we don't have insurance coverage. Thank you!

Regardless who you select, I'd highly recommend getting all four wisdom teeth out at the same time. We did this for our kids and it really made for easy orthodontia later on.

Although you don't have dental insurance, many plans don't cover (pay) much at all for orthodontics, so no worries there.

Good luck!

Our wonderful dentist recommended Dr. Mark Beinstock & Dr. David Hall who are in the same office. We have gone to Dr. Hall several times between us. Very professional treatment, kind, painless. We've been very satisfied. The number for both is 569-1889.

Another vote for Dr Suzuki. He extracted a tooth and was virtually pain free.

Well, there is no such thing as painless when it comes to impacted wisdom teeth. So unless all of your son's wisdom teeth have come out most of the way, you can throw all those "painless" recommendations out the window.

Find someone who offers nitrous oxide, which is the cheapest and safest sedative. Your son will float on a hallucinatory cloud during the procedure, but won't be fully out.

This procedure is so common that just about everyone in the area is an expert. If you can find someone who will do it for under $200 per tooth (including sedation, etc) then take it.

Dr. Bienstock did my daughter's wisdom teeth and later also removed 4 teeth that the orthodontist said needed to be taken out, and he did a great job both times. His staff is wonderful and very caring.

Another vote for the offices of Bienstock and Hall. Very knowledgeable, friendly, caring, and compassionate to both kids and adults! Afterall, I freely admit that I am a baby when it comes to doing stuff to my mouth!

Good luck to your son. No fun, no matter who you go with.

Dr. Robert Kiken took all of my wisdom teeth out about 6 years ago, it was a routine extraction. My husband had them out 6 months ago and it was a difficult procedure that was preformed at SB Surgery Center and went great. My brother-in-law then had his taken out a few months later, along with another tooth, without any problems and without insurance. For him we were able to pay part cash and the rest on Care Credit.

I highly recommend Dr. Kiken, he is an excellent surgeon and his staff is wonderful.

Dr. Hall took mine out - and I saw everyone in that office (Dr. Bienstock included) and they were all wonderful. And like another person said - no such thing as painless wisdom tooth removal. I ended up with dry sockets (I always get them in my bottom jaw when there is an extraction) and Dr. Hall's office was great!! I was being packed (ouch) every other day for 3 weeks and they were all so nice and accomodating. The billing dept is good too and will work with you on payments.

I didn't have my wisdom teeth out when I was a teenager (wish I had), and I'm now in my late 20s and having some issues with them. I do have dental insurance, but it doesn't cover the procedure. Without it, it's a few thousand dollars...and I only have 3 of them too!) Hoping at some point I can get them taken out, but my recommendation would be to do it when you have the insurance to pay for it!

Dr. Robert (Bob) Kiken for sure. Having know him personally for a short time prior to needing mine removed, I spoke with him at length prior to having the procedure done. What he explained to me made it easy to understand why so many patients suffer and why I was able to eat solid food THE VERY NEXT DAY, with very little discomfort and virtually no pain. He used to personally offer financing, but has now outsourced that particular to an outside agency that has very reasonable terms.

I would recommend no one else.

Dr. Bienstock did 2 oral surgeries on my son and he was fantastic. He did great work and his staff was very professional. He has offices in SB and Goleta and I understand he is THE go to oral surgeon for young people. His bedside manner with my son, who was in 4th grade at the time, was pitch perfect.

Our dentist recommended Dr. Bienstock for impacted wisdom teeth for our son (no appointment set yet). Dr. B wasn't available when daughter needed hers out and we went to Dr. Kiken (another recommendation from our dentist). Daughter was very happy with Dr. K (he very clearly and reassuringly explained the whys and wherefores - she was terrified - but she felt he spoke to her as an adult). Based on previous comments, seems like either Dr. B or Dr. K would be fine. (Expect the kid to look like a chipmunk for a few days.)

My brother & I both went to Dr Wallace for our wisdom teeth & him and his staff are awesome! I was so nervous and by the time it was over I couldn't believe how easy it was! They were great. I didnt use it, but I know that they also have Care Credit, so u can use that if you dont have insurance. I definitely recommend Dr Wallace for sure!

Kiken is a well-trained surgeon and expert, especially when it comes to tooth extraction, and challenging oral surgery patient cases. I would HIGHLY recommend him and ask about payment options (cash installments or otherwise). Kiken will give you candid feedback if the procedure is necessary and when to do so, which provides peace of mind and saves you dollars in the end. I trust his expertise and his staff is professional.

Kiken is a very good wisdom tooth extraction technician. Just tell him to keep his own mouth shut! He tried to sell us thousands of dollars of unnecessary surgery to remedy what he thought was our daughter's "too gummy" smile for when she would be "interested in having a boyfreind". All this in front of her! This was about 8 years ago and there's still discussion in our family about it. Not only did he imply that there was something wrong with her smile that would interfere in her social life, but that we, as parents, were depriving her of said life if we didn't cough up thousands! BTW, she is, by everyone's account, beautiful. He was unethical and boorish.

Dr. Kiken is the best. Very personable. Top of the line equipment. His nurse has been with him for 26 years, which says something. My teen daughter had impacted wisdom teeth extracted and he did a great job. My 15 year old son is next!

I've had three teeth extracted as an adult by Marc Bienstock, including one severely impacted wisdom tooth. That tooth was under bone which needed to be sawed away to remove it.

I had a consultation with Kiken for that extraction. I was not happy to have him walk in to see me with blood stains on his lab coat. He told me that I would absolutely need a bone graft as well. I did NOT need a bone graft. Dr. Bienstock removed that tooth quickly, skillfully and with perfect bedside manner, as he did with the other teeth he has removed for me, and the area has healed without incident.

362 - Of course there is painless impacted wisdom tooth removal. The only pain a person should experience is afterward once the anesthesia has worn off, though I never have any pain after extractions. One poster mentioned having a dry socket. If you are careful not to dislodge the clot after an extraction, this will not happen - so eat and drink carefully for a few days!
