I am considering seeing a chiropractor and would like to know what fair
and reasonable rates are. Also, any suggestions on reputable
chiropractors in Santa Barbara?

Serena Singer, hands down no questions asked. Don't go to her if you are looking for x-rays and repeat visits for the next six weeks. If you are looking to get rid of your pain in a pain free setting.....she is your girl.

Absolutely, Serena Singer. You should know that she is not a conventional "bone cruncher". She does DNFT -- Directional Non-Force Technique which is based on reflexology. Her partner, Jeff Wilson, is a phenomenal physical therapist.

Brad Johnson & Bruce Akoni-Yong are willing to adjust payments to what you can afford if you are without insurance or poor. I have found that many doctors are more reasonable if you are self-pay, on the spot, because you're too poor to afford insurance.

I'd like to recommend Dr. Gary Kurilla who I recall was $75 for the preliminary and $50 per treatment. He uses kinesiology, muscle feedback and wow it works. He can fix most anything in 4 treatments. Most will want you once or twice a week for years!
I've seen quite a few in this town and my late wife worked for an amazing guy in Reseda when we met. I really prefer Palmer trained guys, I want to be cracked and manipulated. I've seen some "gentle force" guys too and well, the results were also "gentle". There's at least one charlatan out there I am afraid to say. I saw a dozen before I found Gary.
Dr. Zemella on upper State is also not bad. Very nice guy.

Serena Singer is a miracle worker. Google "dnft chiropractic" to read about what she does. No twist, crack, pop. First time I saw her and she said "ok, stand up and see how that feels", I thought "what kind of voodoo B.S. is she trying to pull?!" then I stood up and was amazed. I've been through it all, including surgery, and am convinced that had I seen Serena prior, I would have avoided the knife. I have afriend who suffered for years until I convinced him to see her. He called the next day laughing and covers every tab whenever I see him to this day. That was 10 years ago. Her number is (805) 899-1210, which is one of only 3 phone numbers that I can remember without consulting my phone, if that counts for anything.

Dr. Archie Allen is a chiropractor and applied kinesiologist who is phenomenal. His rate is about the same as everyone else's but people come from all walks of life and from all over the world to see him.

fair and reasonable is zero. chiropractors are quacks, plain and simple. i once took my xray from a reputable s.b. chiropractor to an actual licensed physician...he literally burst out laughing at the WWII era image. i tried to show him the "subluxtion" the chiropractor showed me and he pointed out these white spots throughout the image. one MRI later and my herniated disc was diagnosed, I had an immediate treatment that relieved the pain and am doing fine today while my friends are spending $50 a week on maintenance sessions at the bone cracker. btw, why would cracking your back be any better than cracking your knuckles for relieving the pain of a physical injury?

$75 is probably about right. Dr. Kemp on Chapala, both Jr. and Sr. are great. I see Jr though! A good chiropractor will do massage and look at the whole body, not just your spinal column.

I'm the one who asked the original question. I have really good traditional insurance, but it does not cover alternative medicine. I am not poor, so for 519 to assume that I am is downright sad. I have no idea what I should expect to pay, so I thought I would throw the question out there. Thank you to those who kindly responded. I am a firm believer that alternative treatments can be very helpful for many people, be it chiropractic, acupuncture, massage, or oriental herbs. I also firmly believe in western medicine. The combination can really work out well.

Dr Caviotto, and his rates are reasonable. Have you considered acupuncture? Ahhh one of them! Needles are less invasive than cracking your back or massive moving of the muscles and it works, it truly does. Dr. Geoffry Benson for that, and he does acupuncture on Saturdays. You do not feel it, at all, been there and done that and it worked for my herniated L4-5 (sciatic) disc in a few hour long sessions.

I don't say this to be mean, but just as my own personal experience. I originally was very impressed with Lori O'Hara's untraditional/wellness approach, but she ended up creating more problems than solving my pain. She claimed a lot of my issues were from damage done at childbirth (the doctor injured my spine while my mother gave birth!!!) Her methods and her general business practice really turned me off and so I felt like I "cheated" on her and went to another chiro for an evaluation to see if they'd determine the same problems. I saw Serena Singer and was completely impressed by the experience. Not only did she resolve the new pains I was having to deal with, but has consistently helped with my original problem. I recommend her without hesitation!

616, Chiropractors ARE real doctors. They just don't prescribe medicine to cover your symptoms or do surgery to cut out the bad stuff. And to the other chiro naysayers, if chiropractors are so dangerous, why are they such a popular firm of natural health care and get results with their patients? In 2001, the # of deaths in the United States due to medical errors, medical drugs, surgeries and hospitals was 783,936. In comparison, heart disease only claimed 699,697. The likelihood of stroke with a chiropractic neck adjustment is 1 in 8.06 million adjustments. I'll take the odds with chiropractic. Sure, if I cut my leg off with a chainsaw, I'll go to the hospital. Other than that, I'll stick to chiropractic.

303638 is wrong, chiropractors are NOT real doctors. Totally different licensing requirements. That doesn't mean they don't know what they are doing. The fact is that a lot of the methods used by chiropractors are also used by doctors and physical therapists.

I tried Archie Allen for numerous sessions. He did nothing that helped me and sold me a lot of high-priced supplements that did not do anything either. I thought he was a quack, but YMMV. I have had good results with Lance Schroeder and Lance is not one to try and get you to come in twice a week for the next 3 years. Good guy. Based on comments above, I might give Serena Singer a try next time I have a need.

644, they are DC's, which stands for Doctor of Chiropractic. Licensing is very similar to medical doctors and must do CEU's just like medical doctors. They have to take national and state board exams just like MD's. It's just that MD's are focused on disease, drugs and surgery. DC's are primarily focused on the spine and nervous system as well as musculoskeletal issues. I wouldn't go to a DC for cancer treatment, but when my back is out, I'd rather see a chiropractor and get it fixed as opposed to taking some drugs that are just going to mask the symptoms and not fix the problem.

When my back went totally out 5 years ago I searched all over town for relief from the acute pain I was in. Various chiropractors, acupuncture, etc. I even had cortisone injections into my lumbar spine. Nothing worked! Then I heard of a DC who had one of two computerized stretch tables in this area. I signed up for a round of treatments, and after just 12 each Mon Wed Fri, I was a new man. My wife then got treatment with equally great results. We still go in from time to time for maintainence.
My Rx for all of you is Dr David Inman @ 966-1550 just off upper State St. I guarantee you will be well taken care of and pleased with price, care, etc. There's none better!

717, we're human. I lift heavy stuff I shouldn't (like the 3200 lbs. of flagstone I had to move yesterday and my chiropractor is out of town). We sit at computers with bad posture. We sleep goofy on the couch sometimes and tweak our necks. We play sports. There are plenty of reasons. You don't just go to the dentist once and your teeth are clean forever even though you do brush your teeth. Getting chiropractic on your spine is like getting braces on your teeth. It takes a while to get things back in alignment, especially if things have been out of whack for a while.

Definitely Bob O'Dell up on the Mesa across from the fire station on Cliff Drive. I've been doing maintenance with him for years and years just to keep everything where it should be. I pay $35/visit. He does a full evaluation on new patients. I can guarantee you he is NOT a quack.

Dr. Benjamin Holt at SMART Chiropractic is great! He works with muscles also not just bones. He teaches you how to sit and stand properly to keep your body aligned properly. He treats sports injuries and things like carpal tunnel. He went to medical school and did ER rotations and even worked with treating professional athletes. He's got a tell it like it is personality and takes most insurances. I just paid my co-pay which is weekly. He's a young guy but he knows his stuff!!

I agree with DRBUD. Dr. David Inman was my lifesaver.. I have a herniated L4-L5 and was experiencing sciatica pain for years. I did not want surgery so I tried Dr. Inman.. I have been pain free for 4 years now.. I encourage anyone that has back pain, neck pain or headaches try him.. VERY pleasant office. He is he best....
