No Parking Signs
updated: Jul 30, 2012, 3:21 PM

Do you know if the City of Santa Barbara will issue temporary no parking signs for a moving truck? I am planning to move shortly and there are always a number of cars parked on the street. I would like reserve the some space for my moving truck so I don't have to block the street during the move. What city department would I talk to about this? Thanks!

If this is possible, you might also consider being neighborly and personally notifying the neighbors to help avoid hard feelings and starting things off on the wrong foot.

My $0.02

Not sure - but it would be Public Works/Streets - go to the city building on Garden between Cota & Ortega and talk to the person at the public works counter - they should be able to let you know or lead you to the right place. good luck!

I would skip the formality. Go to the hardware store and purchase a few traffic cones and put them out n the very early morning.

I would contact Mammoth movers or another local company to see what they do. The folks over at Mammoth have always been friendly to me when I call with questions about moving. You will probably get a faster and more accurate response out of them as well. :)

I agree that the movers will have all your answers. If you are not using a moving company then call Public Works at 564-5377 and ask them how to go about doing that.

The city might not, but I bet your color printer or local Kinkos will!

One thing. I know the signs have to be posted for 3 days prior to the "no parking" day. Call the City and see what they say and let everyone here know. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
@050 - I tried putting cones out the night before, and they got moved by the neighbors. ( I was moving in. ) But, once I showed up with my U-Haul, one neighbor moved their car.

The Temporary No Parking Sign Office is closed temporarily do to Fiesta. All of our Temporary No Parking Signs are out in full force and will be temporarily out of stock until the second weekend in August. Thank you for your understanding and patience and let us know if we can assist you any further.

I have done this on Anapamu street by going to the city office on Garden street and applying for a permit to reserve parking for a moving van.

I then went and got signs to post the day and time. I then rented cones from Milpas rentals to put on the tree lawn (parkway) next to the street a couple days ahead of time.

The day of the move we had the spot for the van.

OP:
I commend your planning ahead! It sure is tough on San Remo, f'r instance.
G'luck.

303115 is correct. The public works dept will issue a permit. You must buy the signs yourself and post them 72 hrs in advance. The permit should be diplayed in the windshield of the moving van while it is parked in the no parking zone. I obtain one if these permits once a year for our vendors to park on SB street for an annual event at the courthouse. I usually get 2 spaces for a $34 permit.
