president of West Valley College in Saratoga, California for three years.
Previously she served in a number of academic leadership positions at Lake Tahoe

Services and Dean of Instruction.
Dr. Gaskin began her career in the California Community Colleges 30 years ago as
a part-time faculty member at Barstow College. Academically trained as a fluvial
geomorphologist, she discovered her true calling very quickly as a community
college earth science teacher. As a tenured faculty member at Barstow College,
Dr. Gaskin taught in the fields of geography, geology, and mathematics and
served in faculty leadership roles at the college before migrating north in 1992
to Lake Tahoe Community College.
Dr. Gaskin's professional involvement includes state and regional activities.
She served two terms as the statewide president of the California Community
Colleges Chief Instructional Officers organization and, in this capacity, worked
collaboratively with key stakeholders to further the academic priorities of the
system's 112 colleges. She has served on numerous state-level committees and
presented on a range of educational topics. Dr. Gaskin has served on seven
comprehensive accreditation teams for the Accrediting Commission for Community
and Junior Colleges of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges as a peer
evaluator in the accreditation process.
Dr. Gaskin holds a B.A. and M.A. in Geography from the University of California,
Los Angeles, and a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from the University of
Nevada, Reno. Her dissertation research focused on mission accretion within the
California Community College system.
Dr. Gaskin has an unwavering passion for education and, in her own words,
describes this as follows: "What defines me is my fervent belief in community
colleges as institutions within reach of everyone, where the very best in the
teaching/learning process is practiced, and where the educational dreams of our
students can become reality. These ideals drew me to this calling and have
sustained me for my entire professional life."
