Magellan's 2005 Selling
updated: Jul 30, 2012, 11:26 AM

By Edhat Subscriber

I just called the Magellan's store to to see if they had an item in stock & was told that the company had just been sold. Magellan's has seemed like such a long- time local fixture, I was stunned. (Although the owners previously sold the company in 2005 & ended up suing the buyer--I found that info via a search on Edhat.) The person I spoke with couldn't or wouldn't give me any info & I couldn't find any news via Google so I thought I'd ask the Edhat community if anyone has heard anything about this.

Interesting that they were posting to their Facebook page up until last week and recently released their summer catalog.

Perhaps their private equity owners and partners (Sverica Int'l and Gart Capital) suddenly decided their businesses weren't getting any better in this recession despite the merger in December last year and fired everyone.... you know, like someone who is in the public spotlight a lot these days but I won't mention by name lest I get deleted.

I hope the company survives the transition intact! They really do have a great array of products for sale. There have been a number of homegrown businesses that have been sold - some stayed substantially the same, others changed...I am remembering Territory Ahead, Big Dogs, Lazy Acres, SB Bank & Trust etc. I am sure there are tons more.

Although their store front might be closing, they still have their warehouse in Carpinteria that houses their online products. They may, like many other companies, be switching to just "Online Only" sales...

Great travel store especially when you want the product now rather than buy online where you can't check it out up close & in person.

Please keep us all posted on the status, Magellan watchers.

I'm glad to hear they might be aon-line only. I've been buying from them since they were downtown.

Good news! Magellan's stores will not close as a result of the merger. In fact, plans are in the works to expand our retail store presence to other cities and states. We will continue to publish our catalog and website.
Thanks for all of your kind thoughts and care.

I like firing people too when they are doing a lousy job. Only nanny-staters think you deserve to be paid for incompetence, as long as it is other people'e money. Except other people's money is really yours and mine.

Do you mean tax money, 023? Because money collected through taxation is the government's money. =)

I hope they stay around for the local job factor only. They are overpriced and their stuff is kinda outdated in terms of the way a lot of people travel now. I do think it serves a purpose for those who are older and like certain things when they travel. But the travel clothes and accessories are pretty frumpy and out of touch.

It's been said Ms. Staneff that the local jobs are gone and employees have been asked to move or be given walking papers. Can you comment on this? Reading through the thin veil, it means nothing to SB if Megellian Stores stay open or expand to other cities.

Geez. SB is rapidly becoming even more of a retail desert...

Unity Shoppe is moving into the downtown space. That has been in the works for ages.
