updated: Jul 29, 2012, 8:05 PM

By Ventura FD

Date: July 29, 2012

Incident Number: 12-43890

Information Contact: Doug Miser, Battalion Chief - 339-4300

Incident Type: Vegetation Fire

Date/Time of Incident: July 29, 2012, 1530 hrs

Incident Location: Ventura River Bottom (general location-100 block)

Cause: under investigation

Injuries: None reported

# Personnel: 84

Fire Equipment: 14 Engines, 2 Water Tenders, 2 Hand Crews, 7 Command, 1 Helicopter

Agencies Involved: Ventura City Fire Department, Ventura County Fire Department, Cal Fire, CA State Parks, Ventura PD, CHP, Cal Trans, Union Pacific Railroad

Damage Estimate: N/A

Fire Protection Systems Present: N/A

Narrative: Ventura Fire Department responded to reports of a vegetation fire in the Ventura River bottom near the 101 Fwy. Upon arrival, crews found heavy fire activity threatening the 101 fwy at the 33 fwy interchange.

Due to the remote area, crews had lengthy hose-lays to reach the fire. This incident caused the 101 fwy southbound and transition roads from the 33 fwy to be shut down for over 2 hours due to fire and smoke hazards.

At one point, spot fires occurred in the Cal Trans storage yard across the bike path and resources were diverted to protect structures in that area. After a concerted effort to protect the freeway, railroad and natural resources, the fire was contained at an estimated three acres.

The cause remains under investigation.
