a French Horn! Complicated, yet mellow.....expensive, yet not flashy.....worth all the trouble

Why a kazoo? Reading all fairly interesting what Wiki says about the kazoo didn't help me understand how SBA is like a kazoo. OP asks why could Santa Barbara be compared to a musical instrument.

An out of tune piano. Lots of notes, not all of them agreeable and pleasant. Gorgeous music has been and could be produced, but we need to be tuned up.

Why a kazoo? Because it's unique, makes no pretense at being anything it isn't, sounds terrible most of the time, and is happy with its own cacaphony--kind of like the City Council. The kazoo is also like the State Street night-life--cheap and easy to play. And to make it truly typical of Santa Barbara, you probably have to go to Ventura to buy one.

An old Stradivarius violin, one that still plays sweet music but has been left in disrepair. It will take time, money, patience, and dedication to bring it back to its original glory.

We live in one of the most beautiful places in the world, where the problems are small in comparison to other places in the world, that ....... (dumbfounded).

I would suggest a harp for the rich and multi-faceted spectrum of use, music wise. As for the name, that is for those who keep harping on the negative when there is so much to be thankful for.

Marimba ~ because of the lovely sound they make that remind you of your past, present and future. All different sounds like all the different people that make Santa Barbara so special. Lovely to the ear like the views we see every day are to our eyes. Unique in sound as the town of Santa Barbara is unique.
