I think an upscale deli type place like Cantfields or Metropolus.

Thanks 501. There a colorful marketing brochure available for PDF download. Didn't learn much about the developer, though.

Specialty market for those who want to pay extra for the LEED label. I predict failure too. This area is surrounded by low-income senior and Housing Authority projects, probably one the highest concentration of subsidized fixed-income housing in the city.

No sure who their targeted customer base is or if they will cannibalize from other eating establishments already in this area.

Cantwell's is just a few blocks away for deli and take-out. And Ralph's a few blocks away in the other direction. So those remaning in walking distance are only the fixed-income subsidized housing crowd who did depend on the low-cost Von's offerings.

Parking limitations will restrict the commuter trade. Not sure there will be sufficient walk-in tourism or downtown worker trade to make up the difference.

Whatever it iwill be, they sure are making a huge mess on the streets. Everytime a big truck goes by a lot of dust goes all over the place. I live near by and have awful allergies and respitory issues and it sure doesn't help.

The attitued of the nimby's around here is awesome. I live a few blocks away and am estatic to have a shopping option like this, and I know many others who are as well. That vons was dreadful, and Ralphs is not much better.

I can't wait till it is open.

I also heard that it will be mixed use and the marketplace will be for local products-a permanent Farmer's Market. Maybe it will be like a Olvera Street but with locally grown and produced items. That would be nice! Think positive, folks-come on!

No one has mentioned that the English schools for "foreigners" are right there too. 10,000 students come here from other parts of the world every year, and they might just feel at home with a market like this. It could become a center for the city, it is fairly accessible too, depending on the parking situation. Mixed use works, but big condo complexes don't always (see lower Chapala !!!).

It would be nice if there were a permanent farmer's market, so maybe we could actually drive down State Street on Tuesday afternoons.

There is a permanent farmer's market already in town. It is called Tri-Counties Produce. And a heck of a lot cheaper, more convenient and better variety than this current over-priced "farmers market" shopping vanity.

The negativity of many commenters is disturbing. I think of this as a mini-version of San Francisco's Ferry Building (without the condos on top) or Napa's Oxbow Market, etc. Celebrating local products/produce is a good thing for Santa Barbara. The area is upscale -- bouchon and Olio e Limone, directly across the street one way, Petros the other way, Arlington Theater next door, Downey's a few steps away, & the Granada a few blocks down.

Yes, it will be a mess while construction is happening. Same naysayers tried to keep Whole Foods out, but aside from a bit of extra traffic turning into & out of their parking lot, it is a positive for Santa Barbara. They aren't perfect, but a big supporter of local. So I say thumbs up.

How on earth can anyone compare this obscure location to the commuter traffic intense, tourism traffic intense SF Ferry Building? Looks like out of town yuppie planners are still running amok in this town with their Urban Village nonsense.

While there are a number of high-end restaurants clustered around this area catering to the former Arlington Theater "symphony" crowds, it is not an upscale neighborhood because of the very large concentration of fixed income senior housing and Housing Authority projects.

And since these are mandated low-income units, this neighborhood will not be significantly changing ever, which is why Von's was the way that it was.

This is not NIMBYISM. This is fact and demographics.

Obscure location? When did next door to the Arlington Theater, across the street from Victoria Hall, a block from the Granada Theater, 2 blocks from the Art Museum & Library, and 3 blocks from the Courthouse and County Administration building become an "obscure location"??

There are thousands of people who work in this part of SB that need places to eat lunch every day. This will be a great addition to this area.

Downtown workers are government employee brown baggers. The Art Museum mainly kids on school bus excursions. The Library is a homeless bathroom, free internet pit stop

The Arlington is mainly dark these days. Ages before the Vic opens with no more RDA funds doled out by city council cronies.

Parking access to Granada too far away for street traffic and who are ready to go to sleep anyway after concerts are over. The dinner theater crowd comes only occasionally and not to shop for organic lettuce.

Foreign language school students have prior room and board arrangements before they can come.

Did you ever put boots on the ground before you started your business model? You have very bizarre expectations about life on the streets in SB. I think you got it mixed up with some major urban metropolitan city. Sorry.

Downtown workers are all government employees? Have you ever actually been downtown...?

I just wish to god they'd haul away that ugly, oppressive mural. It could be placed on the side of an industrial building along the freeway, or on one of the freeway walls (inside or out) but please don't keep affronting us locals with it. We have so many very talented artists here that could create a beautiful smaller mural or mosaic or other work of art -- something that would bring a smile instead of a frown as we walk past.

I just looked at their brochure on the website (Google "Santa Barbara Public Market"). There is nothing about this that reflects the "heart of Santa Barbara" as it claims. Just a bunch of stock photography that doesn't even look like SB or its people. This project is clearly the brainchild of an out-of-town developer that knows nothing of the local values, culture, or tradition.
