Cliff Drive Accident
updated: Jul 27, 2012, 9:05 AM

By The Urban Hikers

An VW sedan driven by a young man flipped and careened off the road on Cliff Drive between Hendry's Beach and Yankee Farm Road on Thursday evening just after 8:00 pm. This was a Roger Code Red report.

Thankfully none of the 3 occupants of the car appeared to be injured, however at least one person was transported by ambulance from nearby Yankee Farm Road, after having been fitted with a neck brace. The man, in his late teens/early 20's was seen sitting at the side of the road, about a quarter of a mile from the site of the accident, with a companion. SBPD appeared to be interviewing the two men.

SBFD responded to the scene with Engine 6, and SBPD responded with several units. Paramedics also arrived to tend to the medical needs of the accident victims.

According to first responders, the sedan, heading toward Santa Barbara from Hope Ranch, appeared to have been traveling at a high rate of speed, and missed a curve in the road. Consequently, the sedan crossed the opposing traffic lane, hit the embankment and flipped onto its roof. It reportedly skidded on its roof for quite some distance along the shoulder of the road before coming to rest. Fortunately it stopped just short of a ledge near the roadway where there is a sharp drop-off.

The roadway at the scene of the accident was strewn with a skateboard and a variety of personal items. Luckily the occupants of the car appear to have remained inside, and the injuries they suffered were mild to moderate. When questioned at the scene of the accident, one individual, a young man, told authorities that he was not the driver. He appeared to be unharmed but was handcuffed and taken into custody.

Cliff Drive was closed to traffic in both directions for about an hour while SBPD investigated, SBFD assisted in clean up and a towing company removed the car from the scene. This created an inconvenience for many drivers, as Cliff Drive is a major therefore for traffic to and from Campanil Hill and Hope Ranch.
