Noozhawk carries a good story. Why not wait first for other countries to legalize dope and see how it works out for them? We are already too much of a nation of slackers to add this to the mix. Pot causes brain fuzz for at least 30 days after use so a daily or weekly toker is society's loser 24/7/365. Cool. Pot is as dangerous as alcohol and tobacco. Deal with it. It is more deceptive so it is actually more dangerous. Alcohol at least makes you sick and the body has limits. Tobacco is just down right nasty. But pot makes you too stupid to know how stupid you are and have become and that makes it the most dangerous of all. It is so easy for those outside of the pot world to see the damage pot has caused. It is impossible for those inside the pot world to recognize this for themselves.

117, do you know many functioning members of society who use marijuana daily? I didn't used to, but the more you ask, the more you find out that people you never, ever thought would be "into that" ARE. High-functioning members of society who contribute daily, business owners, professionals, you name it. You are leaving out a large group of people who use marijuana without getting "the stupid" - this is why stereotypes just don't always work. Yes, there are a large number of people who abuse marijuana and do act like idiots because of it, but such is the same with alcohol and any other drug.

144--Portugal decriminalized pot; technically, it didn't legalize it. Read about the distinction online. At any rate, decriminalization has worked there.

2149... yes Portugal decriminalized it a while ago and have some startling stats about the outcome. Allegedly pot smoking or abuse decreased after decriminalization as opposed to the stereotype that has every body baked to high heaven if it were legal. What makes pot criminal is the high cost. Until 7 years ago it cost as much as gold.... for a weed that can grow anywhere with little help. I guess only bankers and oilmen are allowed to make those kinds of obscene profits.

Many people around the world are sick of the failed social experiment known as The Drug War. Facts are facts, and there is no logical explanation for treating cannabis like an evil destroyer of anything except for misconceptions. I don't like cigarettes. I don't like SUV's. But I don't think that users of either should face criminal prosecution. Stop destroying lives with bad laws. Stop criminalizing use of cannabis.

It's so interesting and silly to me how people contrast pot and alcohol, like people will use pot all day while at work but not alcohol. @216's comments about people being high while working at nuclear plants, missile silos or driving trucks is a perfect example. Do people do those things now while drunk on alcohol (which is legal)? No. So why would you think they would do it while high on pot?

117 is probably invested in the parasitic, mostly privately owned prison-industrial-complex - after all, they are one of the main benefactors of the illegality of pot - it costs $billions per annum in CORPORATE WELFARE, paid for by the taxpayers, to house pot "offenders".

Can we give the "slow reaction time" argument a rest? When Michael Phelps won the 100 meter fly by .01 seconds in the 2008 Summer Olympics, do you think he had a problem with "slow reaction time?" And remember, Phelps is no stranger to cannabis. And he's just one example. If you can't tell that someone is impaired, it's probably because they are not.

I attended the forum and found it an interesting debate. Unfortunately, most people come down on one side or the other and are not going to budge. So, the discussion about what it would look like if it were legal, kind of devolved into personal opinions. I felt that that Dr. Bearman was very knowledgeable in terms of the health risks and benefits associated with cannabis use. The DA representative, Von Nguyen didn't really give many specifics, mostly personal opinions. Dale Gieringer gave the most information about what regulation would need to look like and was able to give specific models (Netherlands/India). Alexandra Datig had absolutely nothing of value to add to the discussion and made my brain hurt with her inane babbling, lack of knowledge and misrepresentation of facts.

There are more of us out there than you think. And majority of the pot smokers are functioning members of society. I've been a daily pot smoker for 10+ years now, and i'm considered a 'loser' to society, or have 'brain fuzz' in fact i work a full time job at a bank. I do excel at my job, and in fact, have been multiple times to different positons of the bank. All while still getting high on nights and weekends. I don't come to work high, why? Because, then that would obviously effect my work, just like you don't show up to work drunk. So to say that we're 'losers' 'low lifes' and whatever else you want to add it completely false. Not saying that ALL pot smokers aren't lazy people who just smoke all day, cuz there are plenty our there, just like there are plently of alcoholics who have to scrounge up change just to get the plastic handles of Vodka to get their 'fix' Think again, you might even be working with one and not even know it.

Just check out US Patent 6630507 titled “Cannabinoids as antioxidants and neuroprotectants” which is assigned to The United States of America, as represented by the Department of Health and Human Services. The patent claims that - “Cannabinoids have been found to have antioxidant properties, unrelated to NMDA receptor antagonism. This new found property makes cannabinoids useful in the treatment and prophylaxis of wide variety of oxidation associated diseases, such as ischemic, age-related, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. The cannabinoids are found to have particular application as neuroprotectants, for example in limiting neurological damage following ischemic insults, such as stroke and trauma, or in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and HIV dementia.” It was obtained in October 2003

The lists are true. Here's another - Cannabis won't kill you. - It's not addictive. - Though smoked, you can learn to adjust the dosage. - Schedule it like cocaine, and pharmacies will be able to replace dispensaries. It's not like it's going away. Why are we making such a fuss over a weed? Did anyone else notice that our sheriff's getting $80 million to build a new prison?

Actually, the lists are for the most part BS. As I noted in a related thread, I am pro (regulated/taxed) legalization. I am against spurious lists of mythological/historical figures (with some attached reference to "herb" or "hemp" etc.), or onetime dabblers, former Presidents etc. being cited as "evidence" of the wonders of pot use. Yes, lots of people have smoked and do smoke marijuana, but trotting out these examples weakens your case and simply serves to perpetuate the dumb stoner stereotype. I think almost any substance, including MJ, can be abused/cause problems, but I still think legalization is inevitable. I just hope this time we can skip all the "compassion" and "collective" BS and regulate its recreational use which is what I'd guess 90% of it actually is no matter what guise it's sold under.

Lists aren't part of the discussion. That we continue to use the full force of the federal government to prohibit a substance that millions of Americans responsibly use is. Common sense, facts and decency require that this war must end. Its victims are many, its victories Pyrrhic, its profiteers many.

Even though there are SO MANY things in the marketplace that can kill us, we are critical of grass? I think there must be a lot of people here who are young and haven't been around the block. I know of folks who shouldn't use pot because they are too dense to begin with (myself included-and I don't.) On the other hand I know others who are brilliant and they get high and are still smarter than most of us. Can't we practice common sense instead of over- regulation? I lost a parent from a drunk driver-not a stoned driver. I know there have been French airline pilots who drank wine while flying-so yeah, that is terrible and must be stopped. Some guys got busted a couple of months ago for drinking on their "county" jobs. Are we going to make alcohol illegal? Not even up for discussion. There is a time and place for everything-and over-indulgence is never a good thing, BUT nukes are legal (don't ask me why), all firearms and bomb making items are legal, pesticides, herbicides, fumigants, fluoride, cigarettes, cigars-shall I go on?- all legal and deadly. We need to stop wasting our dollars on prosecuting pot-users while allowing foreign drug dealers to mess up our back hills, our city streets, and economy. If you would agree to all of the dangerous products to remain on the American Market, then I will go along with keeping pot illegal. Let's stop being so hypocritical- and please think about this!
