SB Wildlife Care Network Update

By Santa Barbara Wildlife Care Network
We are settled in our new facilities at 1460 North Fairview Rd, though things
change daily with the amount and type of incoming animals. We are currently caring
for over 60 PELICANS, mostly young juveniles who were found starving and a few
adults with health issues. This year has been excellent for breeding, however
there appears to be more pelicans than nature can support. We are keeping them for
a week or two, fattening them up to get a jump start on life and then releasing
them to Mother Nature. Ultimately, their survival is dependent on their ability
to learn to fish and the availability of fish.
The pelis get fed fish three times a day by dedicated volunteers who toss out fish
to the eager gaping mouths. They eat about 160 lbs of fish per day which brings
the monthly fish bill up to about $8000 per month. Very expensive to say the
least -so donations and community support are very welcome at this time.
