Hwy. 101/Gaviota Update
updated: Jul 23, 2012, 1:29 PM

Source: Caltrans

As the emergency roadwork on US Highway 101 north of the Gaviota tunnel nears completion, all lanes in both directions are set to re-open by 9 pm tonight, Monday, July 23, Caltrans officials have announced.

However, one lane of northbound 101 is scheduled to remain closed during weekday hours from 7 am until 3:30 pm until the end of next week, August 3, while cleanup and transition work to restore the original traffic condition continues. Motorists should expect only minor delays during these non-commute hours.

The CHP will continue with extra patrols in the area to maintain traffic safety.

Northbound lanes of Hwy. 101 were closed and traffic redirected onto the southbound roadway on Tuesday, July 10 to replace a failing drainage culvert under the highway. These emergency repairs were necessary to prevent more serious, long-term roadway damage and to maintain a safe highway condition.

Also, Caltrans plans to reopen the northbound 101 left-turn pocket entering and exiting Gaviota State Park by tomorrow morning. Both sides of the Gaviota Roadside Rest Area remain closed indefinitely.

The contractor for this estimated $1.5 million emergency repair project is Granite Construction of Santa Barbara.

Caltrans sincerely thanks motorists for their patience and cooperation during this emergency roadwork.
