Busy Bee Hive
updated: Jul 21, 2012, 10:11 PM
I built a wooden shed in my backyard. The eaves are closed in with wooden boards. There is a
beehive inside the boxed-in eave right over the door. There are bees going in and out continuously. I
don't want them to be killed, but I need to do something soon before the hive gets bigger or before
someone gets hurt--probably me. Does anyone have any serious suggestions or know a local bee
specialist that could give me advice?

If you click on the Edhat Referrals tab and look up bee keeper, you'll find some names from an earlier discussion.

To make it even easier for you, because I'm a bee supporter: "If you would like to have an SBBA beekeeper relocate the swarm, please call our Bee Rescue Hotline @ 805.699.6229" Is it under "bee" or "honey" in the referral section? "Food" or "pets"? I'm looking right now. I have always had trouble with Edhat's search function. Is there a search button specific to "Referrals"? I'm not being snarky. Ah. I read down the individual columns under "B" listed in "Referrals" instead of across. D'OH! Here's the link: http://www.edhat.com/site/tidbit.cfm?nid=57292 Thanks 160. You've obviously used this site a lot more than I have!

163: Interesting! I also tried and have not had problems with the search function and am grateful to it forToyota repair, but I could find nothing under various searches for bees, except searching in the search box that brought up the quote you referenced. Maybe someone should assemble the info on bees and submit it for the reference section?

sbba.org - if you are not a member and want to help bees you should join. look at the contact page to find out how to get a hold of them. And thank you for not wanting to call a pest control company to exterminate them!

Santa Barbara Beekeepers Association 1503 W. Valerio St., Santa Barbara, CA 93101 805.699.6229 Todd is very sweet and helpful. He migrated the bees in our retainer wall into a portable pine hive. It took 3 days to migrate; we gave them 5 days. Thans again SB Beekeepers Assoc.

glad to see that there are so many people who can conncet you with a bee person that will not kill the bees. we had a major bee hive in the wall of our home a couple years ago. the guy we called did not let the bees live and we had no bees last year here, and very few this year.

You don't say if they are honey bees, people just assumed. If they are wasps, be very careful around them. Best to call an exterminator to come and remove the nest. But be warned, they tend to come back and rebuild. I'm sure there must be a way to prevent this.

Paul Cronshaw is the greatest guy. We had a "structural" hive in walls of our 100-year-old redwood house. We didn't even consider killing the bees, or ripping apart the wall. Took some doing to find Paul. When we used list the County Agricultural Dept gave us, all we got (from 8 bee guys) was talk of pesticides (preferred method!) and/or how we needed to pull apart our walls. $$$. Paul came w/ "Debbie," his protege. Two nicer people don't exist on the planet. Took a bit, but, meanwhile, we enjoyed our house smelling like honey. Paul & Debbie got bees relocated, none of us got stung. Now, we wait for the ants to eat the honey, and the wax moths to come and eat the wax. Easy-peasy. A neighbor had swarms in her mansion; I called Paul on her behalf. She chose to use pesticides, but I kind of expected that of someone who sprays for ants, has no clue about the harm she is doing to herself and her environment. SAVE THE BEES!

Thank you alerting the Santa Barbara City Code Enforcement department. Please turn yourself in at the City Planning office so your government can earn it's rightful due in retroactive fees for your non-conforming structure. Your friends, The City of Santa Barbara

Beekeeper Andrew West, awest@djthrifty.com. Member of the Beekeepers Association. Any member of the group will handle your bees at no charge. Chances are your garden shed is NOT violating any ordinances, and if it were, City inspectors have many more serious "crimes" to investigate.

Best to lose the exterminator's number. I have seen them blast bees with pressurized poison. So monsanto!
