Table Refinishing
updated: Jul 20, 2012, 4:49 PM
I have an English oak dining table (dark wood), and am trying to find a person or place to have it
refinished. I had it done many years ago, based on a referral by a furniture store on Victoria (gone now).
Anybody have a recommendation?

There a place that has been here forever a few doors down from Art From Scrap on East Cota Street that does all sorts of wood refinishing. They know their stuff. Sorry, don't have his name but you can see his sign just about two doors down from the Garden and East Cota intersection.

I know you are asking for professional help, but I wanted to encourage you IF you are up for it, that Howard's Restore a Finish is very easy to use. It comes in a full range of finish colors. Most people are intimidated by the idea of sanding and other prep work, but Howard's formula allows you to simply spread it on, rub it in with steel wool with the grain, and that is it. My hubby and I restored an old antique dining table and chairs of my mother's and also a few small side tables. It did the job on white rings and other marks. Will not help with chips etc., that, a pro would have to address. You do of course have to have a place out of the weather (dampness) to work ; we did it in the garage with the door open. Good luck and hope you enjoy many more years of use from your table, however you go.

889 I think you're referring to Woolfolks Refinishing on East Cota. They've been there for eons and know what they're doing. Look for their sign on the south side of the street - you have to go down a driveway coz they're behind a frame house.

When we moved, our dark oak dining set didn't work in the new room. We took it to Woolfolk's, and we now have a beautiful light oak set. They did a great job, and I recommend them highly.

9949.... the hard part about refinishing your own furniture is not so much the sanding but the gooey mess disposal. Clothes get ruined, driveways and garage floors are stained and it's just dirty smelly work. It is also very tedious work so corners are cut when it's not progressing fast enough (it can take more than a couple of weekends) and these "mistakes" show clearly when the new finish is applied. If you can afford it hire a professional.
