French Festival
updated: Jul 18, 2012, 8:36 AM

By Robert Bernstein

The French Festival was back in a big way for 2012! The event is under slightly new management, with Center Stage Theater holding official title to the event. But Steve Hoegerman, who created the Festival in 1988, was still running the show, seemingly on all stages at once!

Of course, the French Festival is not just about France, but also about all French speaking lands, including French Polynesia, French North Africa, French Indochina and North American Acadian and Cajun.

With non-stop entertainment on three stages, it is not possible to catch every performance, but I did my best!

Entertainment highlights included: The West Coast Ballet - Can Can, Alexandra King and Crystal Indigo - Tribal Belly Dance of North Africa, Tina's Ports of Paradise - French Polynesian Dance. There were also dance lessons for a variety of dance styles.

And, of course, the famous finale performances of the Femmes Fatales Drag Revue and the Poodle Parade!

All of this intermixed with live music performances with vocals, accordions and almost every other instrument. Styles ranged from traditional French country music to Edith Piaf to Jazz and Cajun.

And, naturally, everyone was there to sample the food of a variety of French-speaking lands as well. This included crepes and French pastries, various regional foods of France, Cajun food, French Indochina food and escargots, which have become quite popular now!

Plus, plenty of French art, clothing and crafts!

Here are my photos!

Best wishes, Robert
