Officer Involved Shooting
updated: Jul 16, 2012, 2:04 PM

Source: Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office

On July 15th, 2012 at approximately 3:45 PM, The Santa Barbara Sheriffs Office received a 911 call from a female victim of Domestic Violence. The victim claimed that she was traveling in a vehicle with her male partner, who was threatening her with a knife. The caller further explained that the male subject was going to harm himself or her. The victim was able to tell the 911 dispatcher that she was in the area of Los Alamos, Ca.

Patrol units from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office and the California Highway Patrol were dispatched to the area to look for the vehicle. At approximately 4:00pm, a veteran officer of the California Highway Patrol located the vehicle on Highway 135, approximately 2.5 miles west of Los Alamos. A Sheriff's Sergeant was directly behind the California Highway Patrol. The Officer pulled behind the suspect's vehicle on the side of the roadway. The suspect exited his vehicle and confronted the officer. The suspect's actions caused the officer to believe he was in eminent danger, and the Highway Patrol Officer fired at the suspect striking him several times.

The suspect was flown via life flight helicopter to an area hospital, his condition is unknown. The female victim who initiated the 911 call and her 2 year old child who was also in the vehicle were not injured in the incident. The involved officer is also not injured.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office is handling the criminal investigation surrounding the incident, focusing on the criminal actions of the suspect. The California Highway Patrol is conducting a concurrent administrative investigation into the incident, focusing on the policies and procedures of the California Highway Patrol. It is customary for the Highway Patrol to turn over the criminal investigation to the local agency with jurisdiction in the area where the incident occurred. The concurrent criminal and administrative investigation is also standard in any officer involved shooting.

There is no further information to release at this time. The names, ages and status of the victim and suspect are being withheld at this time. More information will be released in the coming days as it becomes available.
