Does anyone in the community have experience spear fishing? I have seen others spear fishing at Miramar and am thinking of starting there.

Blue Water Hunter in the harbor. Although they have equipment for scuba they specialize in free diving. Andy Taylor, the owner and his employees are THE most knowledgeable and helpful guys around.

Check out spearboard. Just Google it. There's a California/SB section on the board that will tell you where people are going and what they're spearing. Join the board, introduce yourself and you'll probably even find some divers to go with.

Also, make sure you read up on the new closures. Places like Campus point, Coal Oil point are now closed off from fishing and spear fishing.

Keep in mind that underwater everything looks bigger and closer. Only take your shot when you're positive you'll make the kill - injuring fish is cruel as the fish will swim off and die. Talk about a stupid waste.

Yep 116, Eric is the guy to talk to. Down by Bacara is great, especially during lobster season.

Yes, what are looking to find out ? Some basic tips :
You need a fishing license, some competency with a spear gun or Hawaiian sling, and it doesn't hurt to go with someone who's been before. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the local fish and the size limits, and check the visibility / tide before going out.

Yes. Go to a dive shop and educate yourself before you jump in.
