Cruelty to a Pelican
updated: Jul 16, 2012, 9:08 AM

Along with the problems the California Brown Pelicans are having finding food and
avoiding fishing line, there are instances of cruelty. This unfortunate young
adult (about 2-years-old) pelican was found on Saturday at Sea Landing in the
Santa Barbara Harbor. There is no way these cuts on both sides of the pouch could
be caused naturally. The bird is being held by the SBWCN. Perhaps with stitching,
his pouch can be repaired.
If you see cruelty to seabirds (or any wild animal) please call Cal-TIP; 1 888
DFG-CALTIP(888 334-2258). These acts are California and Federal offenses. Your
report can be made anonymously.
If you see cruelty in the Santa Barbara harbor area, please call the Santa Barbara
Harbor Patrol: 564-5530.
