The Brown Pelican Crisis
updated: Jul 14, 2012, 9:05 PM

By Marc Fegarsky

A combination of a good breeding season and low fish numbers are really hurting the juvenile Brown Pelican population all over California, and especially here in Santa Barbara County. Record numbers are showing up at local rehab centers in need of food and medical assistance.

Scientists agree that a fully healthy Pelican population could handle the stress; however the Brown Pelican was only recently removed from the endangered species list and their numbers have not recovered enough to ignore such a crisis.

Over Fifty emaciated pelicans are presently being cared for at the Santa Barbara Wildlife Care Network that makes it their mission to give every animal they care for a fighting chance; and they are in desperate need of your help!

The Santa Barbara Wildlife Care Network needs donations of money for food, and volunteers to help care for these beautiful creatures.

To find out more please go to their website at: www.sbwcn.org

If you see an injured or sick animal you can call their rescue hotline at: 805.681.1080
