Welder

Does anyone out there know of a place that can weld cast iron? It's a really small job and should take
much time. I broke a handle off of an antique cast iron grain mill. I was assembling it so that i could get it
ready to sell, but a small piece sheared off the end where the wood handle attaches to the rotating arm.

You should "google" this: can cast iron be welded? You may be better off having the whole piece remade from steel. Sorry, not what you hoped.

Cast iron can be welded using a stick welder and nickel rods, or with pre-heating by a gas welder using cast iron rod. Experienced welders like the two suggested so far should know what (and what not) to do.

An experienced welder could do it. An honest welder will advise you *not* to do it.

Ferromobius in San Luis is one of the most artistic and talented iron workers on the central coast. He has a web site, has also done some innovative work with shipping containers and transformed them into spectacular homes for low income housing.

Old town Goleta, in back of Santa Cruz Market & behind the rental place: guy in there works AM only, but can and does weld cast iron. He welded a cast iron printing press part for me. Anybody else have old printing presses? :)

OP here, thank you all for the great suggestions. I've read that it's pretty difficuly to weld cast iron but I really don't have any other choice but to have someone try. The mill is pretty worthless with a broken handle.

Central Machine and welding on Gutierrez. Best Bet. Oldest Shop in town. Get James or Healy to do the work and you will be set. Super honest shop from my exp. Its all about pre-heat and post heat. Cast iron is so dense that when welding it gets really hot and expands and then wants to cool quickly. Bam you get lots of little cracks.

I second Central Machine. They repaired a broken tool rest for my lathe. Not an easy job.
