Has there ever been a Chicago-style pizza place in SB? I'm not looking for a list of
favorite pizza spots, just deep dish, thick as apple pie, Chicago-style pizza.

Deep dish "pizza" is not pizza it's casserole. And no, there has never been a dedicated Chicago style casserole place in SB to my knowledge. Anyone from Chicago knows the casserole stuff is for tourists anyways, really Chicagoans know thin-crust (aka bar pizza, tavern pizza, Chicago style thin and Midwestern thin) is where it's at. It really is the king of pizza styles in Chicago. Thin and crisp, lots of mozz and sauce, and of course no Chicago pizza is complete without some house made sausage. The fennel laced sausage of Chicago is really awesome stuff!

Nardonne's is pretty darned good. (I'm from near Chicago, and deep dish IS real pizza! Sorry, cracker-thin crust lovers.)

Our first night in Chicago, our friends there took us to "Pizzeria Uno" for deep dish pizza. We had one huge iron frying pan brought to our table with two different halves. The best! (And the restaurant validated our parking ticket for the garage across the street, saving us some 20 bucks!)

Ok, about a million Chicagoans right now are annoyed with 374. Fennel laced sausage isn't a "Chicago" thing. And it is pizza, it's just not YOUR kind of pizza. Don't diss styles because they aren't your thing. Diversity is the spice of life. 427P: I thought Nardonne's was more Sicilian-style (thick, but not Chicago). I've been meaning to try it for a while. For Sicilian, I like Nicky D's, but it's still not what I miss from home (PA). I'll have to make a point to try Nardonne's now.

I haven't seen a Chicago style pizza in SB... ever. I too favor Nicky D's for sicilian, just wish they could get that crust to look like the pics on their website! Now Luminati's in Chicago.... that's what I'm talking about!

I've had all sorts of pizza styles across the US and Italy, and I have to say that Chicago (from Pizzeria Due in Chicago) style was by far the least satisfying...absolutely no desire to have it again. The best pizza I've ever had is Barones in Van Nuys. I can fully admit that their style isn't for everyone, but they use the best ingredients. I could easily eat it every meal for a week if I lived close enough to do so....mmmm Second best would be Ivo in Rome. If you ever travel to Italy, it's a must have.

You can order it flash frozen to your door from any of the top 5 pie joints in Chicago. It's a bit pricey but ohhhh so good.

I don't think the OP is looking for opinions, just where he can find a certain style of pizza.

I'm surprised no one's chimed in with how easy it is to make Chicago-style pizza at home.

Nardonne's is new in SB and has an excellent thick crust pizza! It is by far the best pizza in SB, especially since Deano's closed. I can't say if it's Chicago style as I've lived in California my whole life. Give it a try. 17 West Ortega Street, next to the Wildcat.

OP here. @501: Right you are; If I ask for opinions on the "best" style of pizza, we might as well discuss politics. I'll try Nardonne's and will also make a trip to Oxnard to give BJ's a try. Thanks everyone for your input.

Was raised in Chicagoland and loved the Uno and the Due, renowned deep dish pizzerias back then. However, in returning there now, decades later, the pizza there seems fairly good, but nothing to rave about. Pretty heavy also.

We overnight our deep dish pizzas (Lou malnatis) to our house along with some Portillos Italian beefs from tastesofchicago dot com. It's a little pricey but it includes the overnight delivery fee. If you break it down, it turns out to be about $20/pizza which isn't really that much.
