Hoping that someone who frequents the area can fill me in on how bad the traffic is in that area. Have to travel to santa maria tomorrow about 2pm and wonder if it's better to take the pass and pick up the 101 above Gaviota. Will add on quite a bit of time.

Terrible. It added another 20 minutes to the commute today.

Actually, I find that the 154 route is comparable in time to the 101 unless you get stuck behind a gravel truck. If you can keep it at 60 mph through most of it, the route is so much shorter that you can meet or beat someone that has been on the 101 at 70 mph the whole time. All bets are off if a bunch of people from Santa Maria jump onto the 154 to try and avoid the Gaviota bottleneck. It would be very interesting to see the report evaluating the alternatives for construction to see why they picked the one the would be the most inconvenient to the Lompoc/Santa Maria commuters. Remember this the next time Caltrans is asking for more money through bond issues on the ballot.

I think you can count on midday (your 2 pm travel time) and midweek being less congested than the typical morning and afternoon commute. Don't count on 154 being any faster, though it looks normal from my vantage point right now. Any locals familiar with the work going on at Gaviota will also be tempted to use that alternate route.

Too bad the old Sunburst Farms 'Gaviota Store' Restaurant wasn't still there. You could pull over for a pleasant meal with great view and wait out the traffic.

I make this run daily, and not during the "normal" commute hours. It's a wash. If you want to keep moving, i.e., you're a restless driver, take the 154. But don't count on it being faster. It's summer and the Winnebago Warriors are out en masse, not to mention all the truckers w/their CB radios warning each other of the Gaviota Gridlock and advising the 154 as an alternate. We just have to grin & bear it 'til this is over. -MJ

About a half hour longer going NB the past 2 days at afternoon commute time. 154 may be faster, also more dangerous. I'm good with getting there slower but intact. Roll down the window, turn up the music, laugh at the uptight idiots who can't seem to afford a half hour out of their lives.
