Regarding John Wiley's aerial photo of the construction at the SB
Bowl, what exactly are they building there? Looks like it's uphill
from the upper-level seats of the Bowl. What is it?

Some new concession area. I just checked the Bowl website, but they don't have any info about the new construction. But, I heard it should be done within the next few months.

The new Overlook will have updated concessions and, most importantly, permanent restrooms inside the building. All the concessions will be handled with "carts" like the snack carts in the main plaza. This will signal the end to Port-o-potties inside the Bowl (there are still two in the lower parking lot that will get renovated starting later this year). The major reason for renovating the upper Overlook area (both Phase 1 and current Phase 2) was to help shore eroding hill-sides and improved patron experience. The Overlook is scheduled to be open late August (crosses fingers).

Why don't you put a link to John Wiley's photo?

My latest bowl aerial is in this Edhat item. I found this project description on the Bowl's website: "The Overlook: Phase 1 - Phase 1 of The Overlook is all about infrastructure. Construction began immediately following the 2009 concert season and includes reinforcement to the hillside to secure rocks and boulders, a new spotlight platform and building, and a new outlook area with sweeping ocean views. Ultimately, The Overlook will be an entirely new plaza, high above the Bowl. Top-quality food concessions, spacious restrooms, a large wrap-around terrace and spectacular view will provide a convenient and comfortable pre- and mid-concert gathering spot for patrons. ...future investments: The Overlook: Phase 2 – An upper-level terrace with concessions and restrooms"

I may be a victim of historical reference, but am I the only one who thinks that the last remodel of the stage area of the bowl is too grand in scope in turns of the mass of the structure compared with the area? I know technical improvements needed to be done, and I appreciate the updates to the underground, but the Stonehenge like stage structure just seems out of place with the surrounding topography and for me seems to overwhelm. Even from the bar area at the top it looks weird to me. I know going back to the days of sitting on the grass with your cooler is long gone, but just wondered if anyone preferred the visual aspect of how it used to blend more into the surroundings.

MESARATS, I totally agree. I think the stage is horrible.

The stage was updated with the load-bearing grid above it to hold equipment of more popular bands. It is now able to host artists gear that can't even use it at the Hollywood Bowl, so bands like radiohead had all their lights in SB, but not other places....pretty cool if you ask me, but I understand the old timers longing for the traditional bowl that once was there with the grass. Bring on the music!

Ah, permanent restrooms up top! I like the look of the stage, and if it means they can get ANY band on tour, I like it even more!
