On my usual morning drive today, I was unable to receive FM station KTYD, 99.9 and
instead was getting KOLA 99.9 out of Orange County! Is something going on over
there?

I've also noticed they stopped streaming live via the internet.

I'm listening to it right now and have been since about 8:30 this morning when I drove to work- I have noticed this morning and periodicly during the week that I get short bursts of static. I wonder if they're having trouble with their transmission.

Well, I haven't listening to KTYD since the day I found 106.3 The surf. I figured heck, I've had enough of "Tiny Dancer" 3-5 times a day. Perhaps others have followed suit causing the inevitable demise.

Interesting, doing a google search of the call letters of the two stations I found a discussion where the opposite was happening; KTYD was coming in loud and clear in Ontario. Inversion layer? Atmospheric skip?

KTYD 99.9 is my all-time favorite radio station! I love the variety they play. Good ole' classic rock.... a great mix of favorites and a few obscure songs that you wouldn't necessarily expect on the radio. I sure hope nothing happens to this community treasure.

can the weather effect reception? I have noticed that reception of other stations has not been so good either.

I emailed Lin Aubuchon at KTYD -- she said they were having "technical difficulties" this morning but that everything is now okay. Whew, it would change my whole morning drive if I couldn't listen to them anymore!

Sounds like KTYD went off the air. KOLA is on Box Springs Mountain in Riverside, CA, on the same frequency. If KTYD has a transmitter failure, the signal from KOLA is often quite audible in parts of Santa Barbara, particularly if you have a decent radio and antenna. Around Thousand Oaks and Westlake a car radio will kind of randomly swap between them. FM radio has a "Capture effect". If there are two transmitters on the same frequency, one has to onmy be slightly stronger than the other to completely take over the receiver.

They still have poor signal in SYV...this has been ongoing for over a year. Oh well, I finally realized that I can stream KLOS over my iPhone. Now I don't have to listen to Led Zeppelin/Rush/Elton John every single hour.

This reminds me, if you're ever in Rosarito beach in Baja, tune into Ktyd. It's crystal clear there for some reason.

What I dread is hearing "Southern Man" by Neil Young EVERY DAY. That, and them playing "Comfortably Numb" on a late Friday afternoon... what a downer!

I haven't listened to KTYD since Matt McAllister left in 2008. Speaking of which, I see that Julie and Hayseed are gone too. Anyone know what happened to them?

I've had to face the fact a while ago that radio in this area is not very good. Many of the stations - 99.9, 101.7, 97.5 - play the same thing over and over again. There are so many cool tunes out there - you don't even have to really leave the main stream that they are bound by. But, in fairness, every once in a while, these stations will cough up a gem.....and 99.9 and 101.7 talk about local events. It's not unbearable but wow, it could be so much better.

KRUZ 97.5 must play "Rumor Has It" by Adele 50 times a day! I leave it on for my birds and I'm pretty sure they'll be saying/singing "Rumor Has It" any day now.

Julie went to nursing school in Sacramento. Hayseed was let go (good riddance, my opinion) and I believe picked up by 92.9? But I don't listen to that station.

And I absolutely can not stand listening to an entire hour of Bob Marley at 8 AM on Sundays. Get with it Lin The demographic for that show is not up at 8 AM on Sunday. But the people your sponsors might want to advertise are but they tune out and never come back... Oh well. KTYD lost all their good on air personalities cause they couldn't pay them anymore. Coudn't pay them because advertising dried up. Advertising Dried up because the programming sucks.

Probably Sporadic-E skip.. A few years back, I was in KOLA territory (Inland Empire) and heard KTYD clear as a bell for a few hours. When I lived in Santa Barbara (UCSB) I would routinely hear San Diego radio stations via the overwater path (tropospheric wave bending)

I love Slacker Radio Plus. Much better than anything local. I do try to catch John Palminteri once in a while in the morning. This funny weather can really affect radio signals.

585, I don't ever want to hear Bob Marley, good old rock n' roll is my choice. We saw the Whalers (simply called that, not Bob Marley and the Whalers) on their 1st trip to the U.S. (maybe 1973 or 74) Went to see Sly and the Family Stone at the UCSB Robinson Gym, he had brought the Whalers to tour w/him. No one liked them, it was a big bust.
