Today in Geneva UCSB physicist Joe Incandela revealed to the world that they have discovered the Higgs boson, or something that looks exactly like it. This is the biggest discovery in fundamental physics in decades. July 4, 2012 is a historic day for science, for physics, and for UCSB.

We're already all set up at Stow House, the kid is playing games, we did the pony ride and hay ride and now we're enjoying hot dogs and local beer, and great local music. Waiting for the sun to come out, it's bound to be a relaxing afternoon! Happy 4th of July to everyone - hope you have an awesome day!

Shoreline Park was busy already at 8 am. Western parking lot is booked. Many tables were "reserved" by yellow tape yesterday. Most of them have people at them now, but one is still taped and empty. Where are they going to park once they get here to claim "their" space? Must be frustrating for folks looking for a place to picnic, to see an unused table. If it was me, I'd just take it over, at this point.

Happy 4th of July to all! And if you're flying the red, white and blue, or watching the rockets' red glare this evening, remember that the vast bulk of the American flags we merrily wave, and the fireworks we set off in celebration of liberty - are imported from totalitarian, Communist China. Way to go! (not!).

Totalitarian, yes. But Communist pretty much in name only.

Our flag is flying and our neighborhood is tranquil. I remember visiting Independence Hall in Philadelphia several years ago and I teared up thinking how people put their lives and fortunes on the line in order to achieve our independence. At the time I knew that there was one Revolutionary War patriot on my family tree. Since then I have proven six more much to my surprise. We need to think of all of the patriots who have fought for our freedom and are doing so right now. Celebrate and remember the meaning of the Fourth of July.

Happy WIll Smith Day! Because if it wasn't for the bravery of this man going up and defeating the aliens, even when they were shooting that green sh** at him he still prevailed! Because if it wasn't for him we wouldn't be where we are today!

Hard to believe this seems like the first totally sun-less day for a month! I'll see what I can see from my home. Cheers indeed to CERN & all involved. (I look at Google news page every morning after checking e-mail. :-))

Thanks to SBPD and great neighbors! I walked out of my house this afternoon (7/4) to find a policewoman approaching my front porch. To my surprise, the officer told me that she was responding to a call about a flag being stolen. I looked up to see that my flag was gone. Turns out a neighbor (who I barely know) called the police after seeing the guy climbing onto my porch to take my flag (and telling him to put it back, to no avail). The police jumped on it, caught the guy two blocks away, found my flag (which had been dumped in someone's yard up the street), and returned it to me. It's so nice, amid all of the problems in our culture, to know that neighbors here in S.B. are true neighbors. Gratitude to all who "do the right thing" in our community.

Too much police presence, and not to keep us safe, but to rack up dollars by issuing citations. We are not free.

322, we're all totally free. If you think you're not free, then you're not, and it's self-imposed. Liberate yourself!

@294117 Blame the party that outsourced jobs and would have let the Amercan auto industry fail.
