July 4, 2012 - American Independence

I bet you're expecting a newsletter discussing the history of July 4th. Well, you are right. However, in true Edhat fashion, we're not going to discuss the humdrum facts but rather quirky tidbits about this celebrated holiday of ours.

Did you know...

  • Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be the national animal but was outvoted when John Adams and Thomas Jefferson chose the bald eagle.
  • The national anthem is actually set to the tune of an old English drinking song called To Anacreon in Heaven.
  • About one in four Americans do not know the country from which we won our independence.
  • Approximately 150 million hot dogs are consumed on this day.
  • The song "Yankee Doodle" was sung originally by British officers making fun of backwoods Americans.
  • The percentage of American homes with an outdoor grill is 87 percent.

We here at Edhat wish everyone a fun and safe 4th of July holiday. Enjoy your hot dogs, outdoor grills, beverages of choice and fireworks.
