Painted Cave Fire Recap
updated: Jul 03, 2012, 10:33 AM
By Ralph DeVane
I was a company officer of an engine company assigned to the dump fire of the day of the Painted Cave
Fire. Someone wrongly posted that the dump fire was out when the Painted Cave Fire started. The fact
was, although the main body of fire was out, the high winds were blowing a large amount of embers
causing spot fires on the El Sueno Road properties. Because we were trying to extinguish the source of the
embers, crews were literally pinned down trying to address the spotting conditions until the Painted Cave
Fire came down to us. At that point, we moved into the upper State St. area for structure protection of
homes between State St. and Hope Ranch. Had the winds not died down, the fire would have gone to the
beach.
