Dog Trainer
updated: Jul 02, 2012, 10:08 AM

Recommendation: I'm looking for a very good dog obedience trainer. My best friend got a new dog. He has had numerous ones throughout his life. None have been well trained, if at all. The last one was an assertive nightmare. I would like to give my friend a gift certificate to have his new puppy properly trained. Any local suggestions?

SB Humane Society has a pet behavioral specialist. Lots of great pet resources at the Humane Society. Low-cost too.

In order of preference: John Sorosky at Camp Canine. He's a master at solving problems. Anne is also phenomenal, her dogs are agility champions. Nathan at Loose Pooch, also does a nice job, but not in the same class as John and Anne.

Joan Hunter Mayer at The Inquisitive Canine. She does excellent positive training, is a certified trainer, and gives classes, individual training and City of SB classes. 805 415-3101. I have personal experience with her with several dogs and she is great. She can handle ordinary training and problems.

Wency Lopez has been training dogs and their people in SB for over 20 years. I know many people who have used her with positive results and recentley learned a lot myself just sitting in on a session with a very large bull headed Lab He is no longer draging his person down the street I think many times the biggest issue is getting the people to be consistent in following up after the training. You can do a search or her number is 805-563-1299

Most people that gets dogs and don't properly train them are either too busy and shouldn't have dogs, too poor and shouldn't have dogs, or too lazy and shouldn't have dogs. In other words, if you get a dog that's not trained, you should either train it or not get the dog to begin with.

You are an awful generous person to want to do this for your friend, but if your friend is short on cash you should know that full, proper training can easily run $500. But partial training is certainly better than nothing. And if your friend hasn't trained dogs in the past because he is the lazy type or short on time, then no amount of gift certificates is going to get him to train his dog.

If your friend is interested in on-going group obedience classes, SB Flyers (flyball, agility AND obedience) offers classes. Google their website for more info.

The best-trained dogs have owners who train with them and continue that learning partnership after the formal lessons have ended.

Another plug for Wency Lopez. I've known her as a dog/person trainer for almost 20 years. She is good with the dogs and straight forward with the handlers.

Dogs are not hard to train, it's the handlers that are hard to train!

Good luck with your friend! Happiness is a well-trained dog!

Andrea Bratt Frick, she's amazing, certified CPDT, and much more. All positve reinforcement training. She's been training dogs and giving training sessions for several organizations for a number of years, like DAWG, and K-9 PALS, for their dogs, volunteers, and shelter dog adopters. She teaches classes at the Humane Society, too. 805-708-1418.

I have seen Anne Swan in action... and without a doubt is a well educated dog trainer and trains with POSITIVE training.... I would recommend her to anyone for any dog!!

I also agree with 296505P in that the training and connection between your dog and you goes way beyond and after you and your dog have been taught.

I would like to see these other instructors/trainers in action sometime.... it is always nice to see what is out there and how each of them have their own unique way of training....

Hats off to Anne Swan..... she trained my dogs....
( and me) and we are one big happy family!!

John Sorosky of Camp Canine. I went to some of his Coffee Shop training classes and also had one private lesson with him.

I agree that the training of the owner is just as important, if not more so, than the training of the dog. I walk my dog twice a day, and everyday work on her heel and site. Then when we get home, I work on her stay. Most days, I work on her leave and get it, using food. I am now working with her on coming back when off-leash.

I learned all of this from John.
