Fall From the Cliffs at Shoreline Park
updated: Jul 01, 2012, 10:18 AM

By the Urban Hikers

As reported by Roger Code Red at about about 6:45 on Sunday morning, a man and woman who had fallen from the cliff at Shoreline Park were found on the beach below.

The couple, a man and woman in their 50's, had apparently hopped the fence to sit at the edge of the cliff on Ledbetter Point, sometime either late Saturday night or early Sunday morning. Wrapped in a blanket while sitting next to each other on an overhanging section of the ledge, they tumbled from the cliff to the rocks and sand below, which is about a 30 foot drop.

A man walking along the beach noticed the couple, and their blanket. Having no cell phone, the passerby contacted a second woman who, using her cell phone called the emergency into 911.

The Harbor Patrol immediately responded with a truck along the beach. The tide was rising, and the Harbor Patrol immediately removed the couple from the beach to transport them to an awaiting ambulances at the Ledbetter Beach Parking lot for transport to Cottage Hospital.

Also responding to the early morning incident were SBFD Engines 6 and 1, SBFD Truck 1 (the big big ladder truck) and one Battalion Chief. SBPD responded as well.

According to residents of the area, the City has just completed the installation of new, slightly higher fencing along the edge of the bluffs. They have not, however made the gate any higher, although it's chained and locked.

The injured couple have reportedly sustained major injuries. At the time emergency personnel reached them, the woman was conscious, and able to answer questions. The man, however, appeared to be unconscious.

Thank you to the emergency personnel who's quick and efficient actions led to expeditious first aid, medical attention and transport to the hospital. We hope the fall victims make speedy and complete recoveries.
