I noticed in Northwest Goleta that there are new signs on Cathedral Oaks Rd and
Winchester Canyon Rd prohibiting parking for large vehicles. This seems to have
cleared out the numerous large RV's that were always stored there.
I'm glad to see them gone because many were old and dilapidated and people were
getting away with not paying for proper RV storage. But, I noticed a couple of them
parked on nearby streets. Does anyone have any background information on this?

City just publicized their overnight free RV parking program in the national media ... again .... and again, they are now flooding into Santa Barbara from all over to get their freebies.

Those were occupied RV's, the occupants still have their extra cars parked in that block. Maybe they work for some one in the neighborhood where they are parking now. Less concerning that not paying for storage, was the not paying for camping or having a place to dump their waste tanks.

2125.... I heard that too and there is now a long caravan of gypsy RVs heading to the Central Coast to take advantage of the City's generous hospitality. HAH.... you thought the homeless folks were annoying, gypsies are great picpockets, send out their little children to beg mercilessly and when you turn around they rob you blind. I'm telling you.... you're gonna want the homeless folks you've grown accustomed to over this lot.

I certainly agree that you shouldn't be subjected to seeing old and dilapidated RV's and people who have no money getting away with not paying for proper RV storage. It makes no sense to avoid the fact that extermination of the poor is our only option. We need to act on this immediately, since it's an issue that will increase in importance by at least an order of magnitude in the next decade.

In case nobody in rich, sunny Santa Barbara (or Goleta for that matter) noticed most middle class American families lost 40% of their net worth in the financial meltdown of 2007. It's not just the loathsome poor getting poorer while the rich get richer but the ones in the middle have been pushed down too. But for the grace of God that could be you living in a dilapidated RV with barely a pot to piss in. Please be human and have a little compassion for those less fortunate.

What are the rules in the County and Goleta, is it the same 72 hrs parking limit and no overnight camping that the City has? Has anyone successfully gotten the Goleta Police or Sheriff's department to roll on a complaint of overnight camping?

To all the responders decrying the plight of the poor and the insensitivity of the "rich" Goletans, how about we send all the RV's to park on YOUR street and have people live in front of YOUR house. Sounds like a win-win.

Oh good grief, losing the inflated value of one's home is not losing net worth. Only getting a reality check that one' former "net worth" was bloated and unrealistic in the first place. Funny how everyone's tune changes - hate the greedy bankers who helped fuel easy money lending that artificially drove up property values - and now complain when your own previously inflated "net worth" drops back to appropriate values, not dependent upon the prior home lending frenzies. Hey, that's life and you could see this one coming so stop whining about your own greedy blinders you put on yourself. Just more union lackies trying to stir up class warfare and move in to grab more for themselves. PS: K-Mart's vagrant RV parking policies have led to vagrants, pandhandlers and grifters on every surrounding street corner begging passerbys to Camino Real shopping center - starve them out by not giving them one single penny.

The RVs are prohibited on certain streets by a new ordinance. They will move to other streets, but they are prohibited on all streets from Monday through Friday from 7:30 AM to 4 PM. Many Goleta citizens are tired of our streets being free storage lots.

Thank you, 248! Some compassion is desperately needed in this town. I wholeheartedly agree with you. I am paycheck to paycheck and thank God every day that I get to live here with a roof over my head, but if a major medical disaster happened to me, I'd be out there too... sober and responsible, just poor.

There is no duty of compassion for those who choose to live beyond their means. Just the opposite; compassion requires these inappropriate life-style choices be discouraged. Compassion means those who continue to make poor lifestyle choices do not inflict the consequences of their own lack of personal responsibility on others. 292311, you have things backwards. See if you can turn things around. Life is not a one-way street accruing benefits only to those who choose to mess up their own lives. Compassion says: get your act together. You will find tough love is the best kind.

I just went to the K-Mart parking lot for the first time since the "No RV Street Parking" went into effect. It seems most of the RV's that used to be on the streets are in that lot now. I counted at least 10. You can barely maneuver through the lot now.

K-Mart is on private property and they have valid towaway signs posted throughout their property. They (or the property management company) need to enforce their posted policies. The contracted towing company will come out and remove the vehicles. Also, it is illegal to park for more than 72 hours on any public street in Goleta but towing for public property can only happen through law enforcement (SBSO or CHP as the street may dictate). And, in fairness, many RV's are not occupied by homeless people. They are owned by people in the neighborhood who don't have room for them on their property or don't want to pay for separate storage.

285 and the others bashing the much diminished Middle Class. Maybe YOUR retirement and investment funds survived the 2007-2010 period more or less intact. OURS DIDN'T! This had NOTHING to do with the value of our home. The melt-down destroyed savings we had accumulated through hard work and sacrificing today, for the sake of a healthier tomorrow. Now we have to listen to the likes of you wishing further ill upon us? I think I'm going to hike over to your front yard and be physically sick on your manicured front lawn.

Exactly @319 this is the land of opportunity therefore poor people are just taking the opportunity to be poor. I bet that attitude helps a lot of people sleep at night. We dont need a safety net, they want to be homeless and starving because otherwise they wouldn't be. I dont think the homeless and those living out of a car should have free reign to break laws and be a nuisance. I also dont think living like they do is their first choice, it is likely their only choice. I do think a solution is needed. Lets all realize that f*^* 'em isn't a solution, just the reaction of scared people that feel more comfortable with their heads in the sand and rose colored glasses.

Our neighborhood has a few RVs that regularly cycle thru. We haven't seen the loooong white RV that tows a black Toyota RAV4 in a long while, and I find myself wondering how they are doing and if they are OK. At first I was upset to see "those homeless people" parking their "junk" on my street, but I've never seen any trash or "other waste" and so I've relaxed. Our La Colina RVers come and go, the people associated to them seem clean and quiet. I've almost thought of knocking at their door to say "welcome to the neighborhood". But we don't think like that here at Edhat anymore. RVers are suspect as poor, second or third class citizens who we should fear or hate. Sucks to be us, doesn't it? If only we could be happy again.

292416 - Probably the only reason you are whining about your retirement money is because you panicked and withdrew it all when the the market was at its nadir. The fact is that since this date in 2006, the DJIA has INCREASED by 15%!!! Over 6 years that's an average annual INCREASE of 2.35%. Also, over that time span, the DJIA increase has beaten the inflation rate. And for those approaching retirement age, who have paid into a 401K their entire career, the DJIA has averaged a yearly INCREASE of 8.6%. The sky is NOT falling, folks.
