What type of birds are roosting in the eucalyptus trees, beach side of the 101, near Sheffield Drive exit?

They are Cormorants. There was already a post with pictures just last week.

OP Here: Since I don't read Edhat every single day, I wasn't aware. Thanks for the snippy reply.

I must have missed that earlier post too and was also wondering about those birds. Never seen them there before.

They are strange birds. Have to dry the water off of themselves (why you see them sunbathing with wings outstretched) and their feet look like ducks, but they are able to perch on a branch unlike ducks.

The Urban Hikers included a few photos of the trees with the nesting birds in their last article, which was in the Sunday newsletter.

I have seen them variously identified as Brandt's and Double-crested Cormorants. Has anyone actually stopped to get a good i.d.? Both are common most of the year here.

Without a picture to work off of, they might have been Phalacrocorax perspicillatus or Raphus cucullatus. We may never know…

The zoo cleared out most of their euc nesting sites in the children's area so they are moving away from there and finding locations as close to that as possible. I live right next to the Sheffield exit so they are welcome!!

@108 ,,,OR someone with binocs and a bird book could actually look at the birds--there are quite a few of them--and identify them.

I saw an article in the News-Press at my aunt's house (don't take the thing, get my news on edhat). The lady w/a bird column wrote extensively about them, she identified what kind but I don't remember. Love seeing them on my way home to Carp.

Careful while you are underneath them....they are big birds that create big bird poop. You don't want it landing on your car or your head!

I rode my bike around the bird refuge, took a picture of the efforts to clean up the algae bloom and noticed there were no cormorants on the islands. They must have moved to Summerland to roost. They'll probably move back as soon as the pond gets cleaned up.

In March, I went to Florida and saw a bird rookery in the middle of the Peace River. It was spectacular seeing all of these strange birds setting up shop on several trees on the island. I love nature. How blessed we are to be witnesses.
