Down to the Dump
updated: Jun 27, 2012, 7:06 AM
I need to have an entire one-bedroom cottage totally cleared out and everything taken to the dump
because of mold problems. Can anyone recommend a good hauling company? Shouldn't take them more
than half a day, but they will need a big truck.

Or you cuold save yourself a ton of money by posting an ad in the 'gigs' section on craigslist. there are tons of people who would love the work and if its just throwing stuff out, you dont really need to worry about anything. just pay a reasonable amount and you will get plenty of responses.

The county Environmental Health Dep't should be able to give you information about the seriousness of mold issues. It's not "Just throwing out junk" If it's mold; you should look into mold remediation services. You might be liable for hazardous waste (re the hauler's exposure) Call some disaster cleanup services to get estimates (and get references!) .

We had good experience with Herbert Torres Hauling (805) 689-2282 He hauled away debris from a shower that had developed rot beneath the tile. He seemed efficient and professional.

Just swab everything down with a Clorox solution if you think you have a problem. Mold is a pretty bogus catchall scam these days. Junk science.

Junk science? Someone under treatment at UCLA for aggressive cancer, had to move out of a moldy rental.

It's only "junk science" in the eyes of those who are at fault of poor maintenance, repair, construction, etc. The actress Brittany Murphy and her husband both died from illness brought on by mold due to faulty construction of their home. Read Surviving Mold by Dr. Ritchie Shoemaker. He's a genius and studied thousands of Hurricane Katrina survivors backed by the government. Not lacking scientific confirmation at all.

@924 - Prescription drug addicts like Murphy often have lowered immune response similar to a cancer patient like 910P, so something that's "junk science" to most of us might harm them. Wear a mask, dump it and finish with a nice full bottle of Clorox and you'll be fine...Black mold was just one in a long line of media scares a la radon.

The 1-800-Got-Junk. I've used them twice, they give a short time range to show up, always on time, they are quick and very courteous and clean up everything. And for a good price on the amt of stuff hauled and will give discounts for future hauls.

Junk science is when someone just files a lawsuit claiming mold caused hospital deaths, but does not wait to learn the verdict.

Doing the safe removal of mold- and fungus- infected building materials is not for the inexperienced and untrained, if only for their own protection, and for that of the future occupants/owners. Containment of the spores should be maximized, or it can gain a foothold elsewhere. ( *Infectious Disease physician at Stanford) If as the OP states, the mold IS everywhere, and the 'cottage' (tear-down?) is so fully involved it will need to be gutted, hiring a professional, and getting documentation of the work being done to code, will protect the property owner from possible lawsuit exposure, and future occupants from health risk. It says much that the OP did not address safety but only economics.
