Dive Operation
updated: Jun 26, 2012, 3:41 PM
I'm an advanced PADI diver with about 100 dives logged, but haven't dived in five
years. I'm going to Grand Cayman in December and want to (1) get my reg serviced
and ready and (2) get in a refresher dive (even in a pool) just to get myself
reacquainted with my equipment. I don't need a full day on a boat at the Channel
Islands, just an hour of revisiting the processes.
Does anyone have a quality, reliable dive operation to recommend for these
services?

Two excellent dive shops have pools and service depts.- Aquatics in Goleta and Anacapa Dive Center. Diving is a like riding a bicycle, when you jump in the pool and do some basic skills your muscle memory will kick in like it was only yesterday when you last went diving. If you don't have one rent a dive computer if you'll be doing many multi-dive days involving walls (deep dives) and such.

Aquatics in goleta is your only choice , Anacapa dive closed over a year ago . You might also check out Blue Water Hunter in the S.B. harbor , though it would have to be a beach dive , they can service your equipment.

OP here -- thanks to both of you! Yes, I have a dive computer (probably needs a new battery though) and a beach dive would be perfect. At least I don't have to schlepp down to Ventura! Outstanding. Many thanks again.

I would recommend checking out Paradise Dive Club (you can google it). They are a very inviting group of divers from novice on up. There is always someone or other making a each dive.

Take up a new hobby because after five years of inactivity you'd be prime candidate for a floater. Think about it....really.

722 that's a silly response or just completely uninformed. OP of you go through Blue Water they can set you up with very good instructors who use a local pool. Enjoy all that the oceans have to share!

Blue Water Hunter takes charter dive trips several times a month. Check them out for quality service and trips.

Michael Taylor, who used to run Anacapa Divers, is excellent. Last summer, my husband did his open water certification and I took a refresher (50 dives, also rusty after several years) with him and were very happy. He was professional and thorough, but also a really nice guy - highly recommended. info "at" santabarbarascuba "dot" com

I got a prompt, knowledgeable and helpful response from Andy Taylor at Blue Water Divers (blueh20@west.net) and I'm definitely going to work with this operator. I intend on not being a "floater" thank you -- I've been in this situation before as a recreational diver, which is why I take care of getting my equipment serviced and back in shape as well as getting myself back up to speed well in advance of jumping off a boat in an unfamiliar place! Hence, the request for assistance in locating a dive operator to do just that. Again thanks to everyone who contributed useful information.

1722.... what a downer. Do you always tell everyone "no, you can't"? As a former dive instructor who has trained my share of rusty vacationers I can tell you that 100 logged dives is plenty experience to pick it up again with no problems.... at all.
