Car Wax
updated: Jun 26, 2012, 11:33 AM

Edhat is a great resource for people giving helpful advice to each other. I am hoping for such helpful advice!

I recently had a bad experience with Educated Car Wash. Can people recommend any other places to get an affordable hand car wax in the area?

What do you want to pay? I'm curious.

I always heard that you should stay away from the car dealers' services but I've had a great experience at Graham Chevrolet on Hope Ave. I now take all my cars there. Their detailing service is super and people who I've recommend the service to have reported the same. Beto is the detailer in charge there.

Good luck and report what you decide!

I've taken my car to Fairview 76 Carwash and been pleased with the results. Hope you find a place you like.

Call Terry Howell. He does a great job and is very reasonable. He has a shop on E. Haley and also can come out to you. Everything from a basic wash to a full detail. 805-729-7618

I "roll my own" as in I have my own oscillating buffer and the 4 different hardness pads to use on it. I use two different grades of polish to get the swirls and lines from the previous years washing out of the clear coat. Before that I clay bar the entire car after a good washing, the clay bar being used to lift any embedded grime out of the paint and strip all the old wax. I know its really going overboard and it takes about 12 hours to do it right but my gawd does it look good when I'm done! I don't know anyone locally who does this level of detail but plan on paying quite a bit for it just considering the hours involved.

Gene Wanek is wonderful, extremely nice, does a great job, will not rip you off, and he is affordable too; He will come to your place and take care of your car. I highly recomend him: (805) 570-1076

SB Hand Carwash is pretty reasonable. If you have a SB Axxess card, even more so.

SB Hand Car Wash & Wax is fantastic and very reasonable. Had my classic Chevy completely detailed for less than 300 bucks a couple years ago. You could probably have them wash/wax your car for less than two bills for sure.

I was used to under $50 for wash and hand wax with real wax. Are any of these places in that price range?

What is your definition of "affordable"? Assuming it takes two to three hours to wash, dry, clay and polish the car, how much an hour would you pay the person doing the job? How about overhead for the business cost, advertising, materials, utilities, insurance, etc.? You can decide to do it yourself or hire someone but don't begrudge them a fair salary. Minimum for should be $60-80 for a decent job at a decent wage.

The job I was used to took about 30 minutes, not 2-3 hours. It was a machine wash and a hand wax. No "clay". Under $50 seemed about right.

Are any of the places suggested in that price range?

Prestige Car Wash on Milpas does a quick and decent job for a pretty affordable price. I get my car washed there ever few weeks and pay $20 for a interior and exterior wash. I think it's another $5-10 or so for wax.

Educated is the best I have found in town for the car washs that have automation..and you can pay extra for the wax...went to Milpas and they really missed alot of stuff and just did not have the attention to detail that Educated has consistently.......I have a 97 Saab convertible and they charge me around 42.00 for a wax...Woody's is great as long as you get the dead bodies out of the trunk before you take it there and have alot of cash kinda expensive......
