Tour de Cinéma

My friends & I want to view as many cycling movies as we can this summer as we get into the spirit of the upcoming Tour de France.

What are some of the classics & some of the not so often viewed gems? Thanks

Breaking Away.....there is no second. The worst stinker is Quicksilver.

199 and 200 beat me to it!

Favorite line? "It's OK, Cyril. I understand." or

"I don't want any more (bleeped for Edhat) 'idi' food!"

LOVE this movie!!!

You might want to watch some movies with drug use, since most if not all of the cyclists in the "Tour de Farce" are doped up. And yes, I am being cynical, but how could someone ride hundreds of miles each day for weeks on end without the use of something to enhance them.

A Sunday in Hell
Stars & Watercarriers
American Flyers
Il Grande Fausto (supposed to be good, may only be in Italian and not sure if it is subtitled)
Overcoming (documentary about Team CSC)

And sort of related: The Triplets of Belleville (bizarre, but interesting animated film)

There are surely more.

Hate to break it to you 204, but sadly, many paid athletes in ALL sports dope.

Cycling seems to be the ONLY sport that's serious about putting a stop to doping as evidenced by the myriad tests participants are subjected.

This can't even be compared to the farce that the NFL, NBA & MLB supposedly put their players through. Look at all the "lifetime" bans numerous players in those have been handed down & yet the same offenders are always back. Hmmmm

Get over it and let's get on with a great list of cycling flicks.

There's the scene in the Wizard of Oz when Miss Gulch rides airborne on her bike past Dorothy's farmhouse as it's carried off by the tornado. But then the bike magically turns into a broom, so if you're a purist, this might not count as strictly a bicycle movie.

The Flying Scotsman _starring Jonny Lee Miller_ in the true story of Graeme Obree, the champion cyclist who built his bicycle from old bits of washing machines .... and cycled on local roads to train.

I believe the Mary Poppins movie has quite a bit of cycling in it. Otherwise, you and your buds might do well by watching some Italian gladiator movies from the 50's and 60's.

Look on Vimeo, com for a series called "64 days - Part 1" or "Project Pedal." 64 Days parts 1 through part 8 are blogs for a independent feature film coming out called "For Thousands of Miles." It's quite a story and very well done.

(from Kickstarter): Project Pedal is an independent documentary about the shift in perspective after traveling alone, for thousands of miles, by bicycle from the Pacific coast to the Atlantic ocean. Sharing people's motivations to leave everything behind, and to understand what they each take away from their overwhelming and painful journey.
