Toro Canyon Park
updated: Jun 23, 2012, 3:31 PM

By Dannie Thornton

One more beautiful park, Toro Canyon Park in the foothills of Montecito will soon come to a horrible end. As we have seen too many times, the management of the Santa Barbara County Parks has decided to eliminate another live in ranger (the ranger has his home in the park and has lived there maintaining the park and its beauty for over 20 years.)

The ranger's residence and job is to be replaced with restaurants, stores or overnight camping cabins, yurts etc. I was talking to a park department employee, and they explained how S.B. County is eliminating all residential park rangers to be replaced with commercialized businesses. This just means that there will be more crowds, more trash, less parking and no one to watch and maintain the parks. Has anyone ever thought about the person who handles the park reservations, cleans the park areas, the playgrounds, the bathrooms, the person who maintains the lawns, the trash, the whole entire operation is more then some know.

It's sad that as a community we have to sit back and watch these rich S.B. County Tyrants tell their 30+ year employees that it's better for the parks to be unwatched and make money then to let these rangers keep their jobs. If you have a problem like I do with big business taking over our natural parks then please email your concerns and complaints to the S.B. County District Supervisor, Salud Carbajal at SupervisorCarbajal@sbcbos1.org

I would love if we as a community could bring these problems out and shed some light to the the people of Santa Barbara County and all the people that enjoy these parks. The Rangers that live in these particular parks have been working for 30+ years and are getting shoved out and replaced by uneducated, criminal record holding, vagrant "Parks hosts." No full time Ranger will be responsible or maintain any of the parks anymore most importantly Toro Canyon Park. No one will be able to handle reservations, do the cleaning and maintain the grounds. Instead there will be small travel trailers full of "park hosts" that have no formal experience, and are replacing well educated and trained veterans of the park service. These "hosts" get paid minimum wage, do 10% of the job needed to get down and feel no responsibility doing what should be done as a full-time live in ranger would do and this is all to save the county money.

The parks will be ran into the ground without these residential rangers. Please help! Contact the District Supervisor in the email address above and show you concerns, complaints and questions. The Rangers and their families as well as the parks thank you for your time.
