Pool Fill In
updated: Jun 22, 2012, 11:27 AM

I am looking for help finding a company to fill in my in ground swimming pool. I am located within the City of Goleta and hope to have the project finished this summer. Thanks for your help

Depends upon the City, but you may need both a contractor to do the work and a geotechnical company to certify the backfill. Typically the bottom is broken out to allow water to drain through the backfill. A call to the City can tell you what will be required. If they are needed, contact the geotechnical company BEFORE work begins. They cannot certify the backfill without visiting the site before and during backfilling. I've gotten a lot of phone calls after the fact and at that point you must remove all the fill and start over in order to have it certified.

Listen to the above. Some people think you just dump a bunch of dirt into the empty pool. No way. It is a good idea to get rid of the pool because they are money and resource sucking pits that rarely get used with worries about skin cancer, attractive nuisance liabilities and indoor A/C to cool down the summers instead.

Usually they are not big enough in the backyard for serious lap swimming exercise and only the grandkids use it on occasional visits if you not longer have kids out there every day in the summer. I hope you can use the space to plant food and fruit/nut trees.

IWL Inc. of Santa Barbara did ours. We chose to have absolutely everything removed, no pool debris was left in the hole at all. They were quite careful with the backfilling and compacting of the fill, and there was no settling at all during the next very rainy winter.

We were very happy with their work.

You will absolutely have to get a demo permit from the City or County however; it is easy to do and not very expensive. I would highly recommend Santa Barbara Bobcat. They did my relative's pool in SB and they were very reasonable with their bid and well below others in the SB area. Compaction is key and the fill dirt they use is very important too. Look SB Bobcat up on the internet.

Let's swap houses? I want to put a pool into the yard at the current house.

Try contacting Niles Standish for you pool filling needs. He has a unique system that you should consider.

I had my pool "removed" by Santa Barbara Bobcat last summer. He did an excellent job. The permitting process was easy. Burke Miller is the owner.

Schwan Brothers removed a pool for me earlier this year, get a couple estimates from the company's listed in the other comments too- I believe that the permit requires punching holes in the bottom of the pool after draining it of course, removing all pool material down 30" from top of ground, filling pool with the broken concrete and gravel, laying a filter fabric over the top oif this, and placing layers of compacted fill dirt on top of this, then re-grading the area for proper drainage.

Another vote for Burke Miller and Santa Barbara Bobcat: Reliable, knowledgeable, professional, easy to work with and very helpful throughout the process.
