Vegan Dining
updated: Jun 21, 2012, 3:22 PM
My son, a vegan, & his girlfriend, a vegetarian, are visiting and wish to dine at
a few good quality restaurants that have dishes each can enjoy. Any ideas?

I'ver heard Adama is good, but pricey. I haven't been. Sojourner is pretty good depending on what you get. My vote is they hit up the Farmer's market, make a little picnic and eat outside at one of our parks or hikes, for the true SB experience!

@206 Adama is a great place. The most expensive item on their dinner menu is $18. Not sure how you concluded that was "pricey". My favorite item is the Vegan “KFC” $16... southern fried gardein, mashed potatoes, gravy, cole slaw, sauteed greens.

Not pricey or fabulous atmosphere, but you can't beat the vegetarian chinese food at ShangHai on Milpas. Orange soy chicken with broccoli is great. Dishes were created by a master Hong Kong chef for his vegetarian daughter.

Try the restaurant guide at the website for Go Vegan Santa Barbara. Adama, Sojourner, Natural Cafe, or any Indian food is always a good bet. Italian too.

The Art Museum Cafe (yep, inside the art museum, lunch only) is terrific, and does some creative vegan and raw food. The new Blue Owl on Canon Perdido is another option for breakfast or lunch.

I've got a few acres of grass that needs to be mowed. They can come over and eat all they want and I'll only charge them $50. It's a great deal

LOL for, "tee-off." I am ALMOST 40 years old (born at Cottage--oh yes I am a TRUE native) and JUST went there last week for my 20th 'wedding' anniversary. It's, "like" (aside from Chuck's) the, "old school STEAK house?" WTF happend to the Good Earth? Mind you, I really didn't like The Good Earth but, it was really nice for those who did, yes? However, Does N E 1 remember Bray's? Wow! I LOVED that place. Sorry folks...Reminiscing...MY BAD.

They can go to any restaurant in SB....they just need to order veggie meals (unless they are weirdos and will "die" if any animal product had crossed a spoon, spatula, or knife). Even at Chuck's or The T-Off they can be happy as....green plants.

Vegetarian is easy at any restaurant. Maybe not the best as the meals won't be specifically targeted to that demographic but it can certainly be done. I wouldn't trust vegan requests at just any restaurant though - most people wouldn't realize or think to exclude gelatin, certain food colorings, and you'd be amazed how dairy products get into so many different products! There are all sorts of interesting terms for things, and unless you're educated on it, they'd be easy to miss. And yes, most people who specify vegan really and truly mean it - otherwise, just vegetarian. My suggestions - Sojourner and Nat'l Cafe.

Brad, the new owner of Aldo's on State Street, used to be the manager at the Sojourner. He has added organic, gluten free, vegetarian dishes to his new tasty menu. There is now something for everyone plus the wonderful patio.

I second, or third, (or whatever) the recommendations for Adama, on lower Chapala. Very tasty. I'm vegan, too, and have had very good experiences at high-end restaurants such as Bouchon and Opal, where I explain beforehand my dietary choice and they are helpful and eager to please, making up special dishes just for me. I'm careful to leave a nice tip to show my appreciation. Plenty of good choices at Mexican restaurants, too - just ask them to hold the cheese and sour cream.

RLMCDON--Just so you know, gelatin, isinglass, rennet, and the like, are also not appropriate for the ovo-lacto vegetarian diet either... But many vegetarians aren't fully aware of what goes into their food.

Vegan here... I can happily recommend Adama (and compared to many places in town, it is not "pricey" except, maybe, a bit high for some lunches). Adama is the only place in town where they can order ANYTHING on the menu as it is fully vegan. Their carrot cake is among the best I have ever had, vegan or otherwise. Other places in town that have good vegan food, but are not all vegan are: Sojourner and The Natural Cafe. If they have time, they should head down to Ventura for dinner (or lunch on Friday or Saturday) at Mary's Secret Garden. I have taken many non-vegan, non-vegetarian people there (parents, teens, etc.) and all have loved it. Google it for hours and menu.

No one has mentioned Spiritland Bistro! (Have they closed?!) on Victoria, near Santa Barbara St, where the old German restaurant used to be. GREAT menu and wines. Check it out!

Im a vegan too. There are only a few restaurants where a vegan cant find good options if they just tell the waiter that they are vegan. Dont go to the vegan places. All they offer are look a like substitutes of what meat eaters have. My favorite meal is at Trattoria Mollie. Tell Ali you want what he eats. Cielito's will make a great vegan dish if you let them know ur vegan. Only place ive seen that has no option for vegetarians even is Cadiz.

ADAMA is amazing! Some of the best food I've ever had, vegan or not. We are not vegans and hubbie and I loved it! I did not find it pricey at all. I got a GIANT serving of lasagne for $16 - took half of it home. We did have some appetizers first....
