Does anyone know of local volunteer opportunities that I can do with my 6 yr. old - other than working
with animals?

Unity Shoppe. I used to take my kids once or twice a month to stock shelves, sweep floors, generally clean up. They still talk about it today. So rewarding, and really an eye-opener for my kids. A 6 yr old can certainly do this work, I believe my kids may have started at around that age.

The Best Day Foundation will be at C-Street in ventura Saturday and Sunday and various weekends during the summer. They provide special needs kids with a fun day of surf lessons, sandcastles, and just an awesome day at the beach. It is very humbling to spend the day with the kids and they would love to spend time with your kid playing too.

9643.... not the Rescue Mission! The kid might want to emulate the homeless alkies if exposed to them.

6 yo is too young for the Rescue Mission.... But it might be a good lesson for teenagers!

Contact Doug Hagensen at the Backyard Bounty department of FoodBank. You and your child can enjoy a day out with others harvesting fruits (oranges, nectarines, avocados, etc.) that will go free to low income families.

Santa Barbara Channelkeeper welcomes children (accompanied by parents or guardians) ages 6-14 for their monthly Stream Team program to take part in monthly water quality monitoring sessions.

I did Stream Team in college, and loved it. Great thing to do with your kid!

One thing you could do is take your child to the Tajiguas landfill. I think everyone should see where the trash ends up. Then you could (great suggestion #625!) start your own volunteer program, just the two of you (maybe a couple of his pals). Positive learning experience is key. Picking up beach trash is VERY rewarding for kids. You're outside, at the beach. (With hats and sunblock!) You're getting exercise and bird-watching. Salt air is good for you. Making the beach nicer for everyone is a great service. Plus you're keeping plastic out of the ocean. People will make positive comments when they see what you're up to. Your child will feel proud and happy.

Re: Backyard Bounty Do a Google search on "Just Between Us! Santa Barbara"; on the site click on "Directory of TV Interviews" and click on "Hagensen, Doug" to see this program in action, including video of school kids participating in a harvesting day.

Lots of great suggestion here -- backyard bounty, trash pick-up (in any public area), helping at a non-profit like Unity shoppe. You could also adopt a block and clean and spruce it up, or volunteer to paint over graffiti, or help an elderly or disabled neighbor with yard clean up or house maintenance. Bless you for being the example to your kids that all parents should be. By starting kids volunteering and seeing what needs to be done at a young age, you help lead them to positive life long habits. Thank you.

I bet residents at retirement homes would love to see a 6 year old. Maybe contact the activities director.

I "third" trash pu at the beach. Then separate the trash from the recyclables and dispose in proper container. Voila, your child is already more educated than the average UCSB student.

I LOVE the idea of beach trash pick up. It's something you can do on your own and there is always junk left behind by thoughtless cretins to pick up! A wonderful lesson.

He/she is a little young for the Solstice parade and/or workshop, but keep it in mind for the future, especially if the child is interested in building things, performing, or has an artistic bent. Lots of fun!!!
