Wow! Congratulations. Interesting thesis. Although I agree that her thesis proves correct with our current youth, I bet it was much different in previous generations. As a 35 year old, I've never thought to do such a thing (although many friends have). In my mind, getting rid of that hair makes you look pre-pubescent and I have no desire to make my body look like a little girl.

This article was far more interesting than I thought it would be - how a cultural norm changes over the years, and as the author acknowledges, goes unnoticed unless stated. It was news to me! I applaud the student's observation and curiosity that led her to pursue the topic as research - and the gumption and to tell her college instructor, and then her parents. Congrats! And also to the University who probably knew there would be some public ridicule - but supported and honored the investigative nature of the work regarding societal shifts.

I don't get it. Don't women shave so their pubic hair doesn't stick out of the sides of their panties or bikinis?

729, I think we are talking a clean shave/wax as opposed to side trimmage. Too bad this didn't start in my generation... I KID! (sort of, kind of)

This pubic hair research is much more important than you might imagine. As pretty much the only university doing this caliber of work, UCSB is on the cutting edge of pubic hair research and has cleverly positioned itself to make the startling breakthrough discoveries on the subject. I look forward to UCSB bravely funding the first pubic hair research center that would surely attract the best international talent regarding bush studies. Please remember that any Nobel Prize awarded for pubic hair research would be enormously beneficial to UCSB because although UCSB has five Nobel Prize winners, none received the award for work they performed at UCSB. A Nobel Prize in pubic hair research would allow UCSB to escape the reputation of being just a warm sunny place for overpaid underachieving deadwood faculty.

This study and the study about how people spill coffee. Can't their talent be spent on other more pressing issues? Why are tax dollars supporting the school and this research?

947P, absolutely men are doing it! Very few but growing trend. Started with men cyclists and wrestlers shaving to improve their game. My interest is in naming the various aspects ( am in advertising/marketing) For men we have "man-scraping" the "Bro-zilion"...etc... For women, there is even a new trend to shave it and put in little jewels and tattoos..."va-blinga" if you will :) Fun stuff, and fascinating! :)

I don't think the issue is so much the student that did the research. I think the main issue is the highly questionable competence or professionalism of Chancellor Yang (paid $400,000/yr by taxpayers) who coddles and encourages such trash science with his "highly prestigious" award. Faculty or administrative accountabilty at UCSB is nonexistent. An independent audit would probably horrify. Except for three Citizen-elected members of the 26 member UC Board of Regents, UC is accountable to nobody elected. All UC Regents should be elected. All Chancellors should be elected. It's outrageous that highly-remunerated public officials are not accountable to the voters that pay their salaries. Establish accountability and the absurd nonsense of things like pubic research will disappear pronto.

Interesting topic, but why do such publications have to be written in that godawful academic argot and opaque cant? Who advises them that they can’t just employ straightforward prose? I mean: “…reiterates hygienic agency.” Please!
