Cascarones
updated: Jun 19, 2012, 10:34 AM

I'm wondering where to purchase cascarones in Santa Barbara during the non-fiesta season? I have a birthday coming up this week and the celebration won't be complete without some confetti eggs!

The same place you buy pumpkins when it's not Halloween and Douglas Firs when it's not Christmas.

You don't.

They're so easy to make. You can purchase the confetti at Michael's. Gently open one end making the opening wide enough to fill the egg with confetti. You can even use the contents for a nice quiche so as not to waste. Then run hot water in them to make sure they're good and clean. Fill with confetti and use tissue paper and glue stick to close the opening. You can decorate them with food coloring, markers, glitter...the possibilities are endless.

They should outlaw the things.

While you're in the process of sucking the eggs out of the shell, you can set one hollow eggshell aside for some extra fun!

What you do is take your hollow eggshell and submerge it in liquid Jello that you've just prepared. Aesthetically, you want to use lemon flavour, although lime or orange will do in a pinch.

Fill your eggshell with the Jello, then seal the small hole with a little Elmer's glue, just for appearance.

Place your Jello egg amongst some hard-boiled eggs in your fridge. Make sure it sets until the insides are of Jello consistency. Then sit back and watch the fun! You can't imagine how off-putting it is to crack open an egg and find...Jello! Not knowing what it is, of course. For an added touch, you might also want to stick a couple of really small feathers into the egg.

Needless to say, Jello eggs are for eating or gross-out purposes only and should not be used in place of cascarone eggs.

Have fun!

No place locally likely sells them "off season" but you can purchase them online if you don't want to make your own.

Ask around. Someone will make some for you. I'm thinking of a couple of junior high girls who might want to make a little extra cash during June.

I hit someone on the head with one of those once and almost knocked them out. Of course I put my weight into it.

In your dairy section...stop by the hole punch at your office on the way home.

What happened to the Kevin Costner story that TMZ had?

Eggshells are typically saved throughout the year for making the cascarones during Fiesta. We have some throughout the year. If you'd like some, please call 805-637-1287.

re:289367-- I never thought of that. I remember that my mom used to blow out the eggs so we could decorate and have the eggs as centerpieces for the Easter table. And people from some countries do elaborate art work on eggshells.

I thought there was a cottage industry for making Fiesta cascarones.... ie, they are home made.

There are always people selling them at the Solstice parade, which is coming up this weekend!

They are everywhere during Fiesta - up and down State Street, De la Guerra Plaza and McKensie Park. I like to buy them from the children, not the adults!

If none of these suggestions pan out, call the Old Spanish Days office (listed in phone book). I used to have the grandkids make them but now I buy them for Fiesta at Easter in Albertsons, they are really beautiful bright colors; seems it's a Mexican tradition to have them at Easter.

REXOFSB Thank you for the best laugh I've had all day! What a great prank with the jello-filled egg - sheer genius!
