I noticed at the county courthouse the American flag is flying at half mast today. Does anyone know why?

Naomi Schwartz died as a result of complications after elective, exploratory surgery. She was previously healthy when she entered the hospital. She did not make it out. This is very tragic.

I'm so glad we have the best health care system in the world that money can buy and that otherwise healthy people never need go to the hospital to die. Naomi's death is a sad reminder that hubris is just a cover.

Naomi Schwartz was a jewel of a resource in our community. Her health, like for many of us, was complicated. It would take more than a simple Yes or No answer.

What's elective about exploratory surgery? Every time in the past that I have read of someone undergoing exploratory surgery, it has had to do with diagnosing some serious-to-life-threatening condition. I'm afraid this story has me confused.

Just so you know: "half-mast" is only aboard ship. On dry land, flags fly at "half-staff." Good-bye, Naomi. I will miss you.
