Nursing Facility
updated: Jun 12, 2012, 12:00 PM

I need to have my elderly father in a skilled nursing facility while he recovers from a hip replacement. My elderly (ambulatory) mother cannot stay at home alone, Does anyone have a suggestion as to a facility where they can both stay together?

the social worker at the hospital should be able to help you find a place

There is a facility in Camarillo named Royal Gardens or something. Our elderly neighbore moved there together and it seems very nice. Valle Verde is lovely but very expensive. Good luck. It is a difficult time.

Val Verde..Don't go to a regular nursing home. It depends on what you can afford.

We went through this 2 yrs ago with my parents. Maravilla and Samarkand are best bets in SB, though not ideal by any means. Absolutely consult a senior living consultant. The hospital or parents' doctor can point you in the right direction.

Good luck. It's not an easy process. And very, very expensive.

Valle Verde would one of the only places to consider - they are expensive but I'm hopeful that your parents or you have the resources to make it work. They are worth the money and they try very hard to work with each of their patients and have quite a few couples who live there (often requiring different levels of care. Wish you well - parents are precious.

Bear in mind that very few of the places being suggested will allow a couple with differing needs to live together. I believe the only two in town that will allow this are Maravilla and Samarkand.

Check into the possibility of having 24/7 in home care. Through friends, family, doctor, and/or church references, you might find a team of helpers who provide more attentiveness than a facility. Payroll can be done by email through Paychex. Make certain you do a background check through the police department and the county's Adult Protective Services. It may be less expensive and more nurturing for your parents, along with being a less formidable a challenge for you than it seems.

Forget any establishments owned by Eve & or Michael Murphy as they are for profit only & we're talking serious for profit at that.

Better have a HUGE bank account & be ready for some shady dealings.

Check the court records if you think I jest.

My Mom was at Mission Terrace for five months before returning home and I was impressed overall by the care.
We used to have hunts for dust and dirt, looking under tables, etc. Clean, pretty good food, as good a facility as one could hope for. Eve was there to check on the ship regularly - I wish Cottage Hospital were as clean and well run.

Vista del Monte assisted living. An excellent and caring facility I believe they could live together there.

I believe that Villa Santa Barbara would work for you. They can stay together and they will work with youto get the care that your parents need.

$6000 a month is not untypical.

Your best bet would be to talk with a geriatric care manager who is not only familiar with community facilities and levels of care but who will be able to assess your parents needs, financial resources and family dynamics to objectively recommend a care solution. Geriatric care managers do not accept fees from facilities for referrals, they are paid by the client, so their focus is on the client and family. You can find a list of certified geriatric care managers in your area at caremanager.org. Senior Planning Services in Santa Barbara has been working with SB seniors for many years and is highly respected in the community.

Hi, I relocated my mother to Lompoc after my father passed. We are originally from SB (born/raised). My mother resides at the Lodge of Lompoc and there is a skillled nursing facility next door, across the parking lot. I moved my mother up to Lompoc to oversee her care and because it is 50% less expensive than Santa Barbara by far. The Lodge of Lompoc is very impressive and I do recommend it. You could have your mother stay at the Lodge under "respite" care if you had your father next door at Lompoc Skilled Nursing and Rehab. Something to think about! Now is the time for you to start planning what you will do with your parents if one of them is no longer able to come home. I wish you luck!

Solvang Friendship House. Lovely people, good care. Much less expensive than in SB and not so far from it to be an issue.
