David Powdrell's Father's Day

By David Powdrell
As Father's Day approaches, if there's one thing I want my children to remember from me, it's that
you always leave a place looking better than when you arrived.
John Muir, Ansel Adams, and others must have wrestled with the fact that by sharing the beauty
and tranquility of the sacred lands they were exploring and photographing, others would come.
And in the process of others coming, the flora, fauna and tranquility would be changed forever.
But also in that equation, education and awareness might help protect the land so that future
generations could experience the beauty firsthand. Stewardship of the land is an awesome
responsibility.
Since kayaking the California coast, I've learned that there are magical places with limited
access still worth protecting: Where bears stroll the beach along the Lost Coast; where small
herds of elk walk peacefully on the sand dunes near Humboldt Bay; where mountain lion, deer
and wild boar saunter along our Central Coast; where elephant seals bark loud to establish their
position and shore birds exist gracefully.
Clearly, I'm no wordsmith. I'm just a hobby photographer with a deep sense of wonder and awe
at the beauty of our California coastline. When camping and exploring the coast, our motto was
to always to leave the place looking better than when we arrived.
My children are now young adults. I hope that as they continue to explore and visit new lands,
and as they marvel at the magic of nature, they too will leave the place looking just a little nicer
than when they arrived.
