Tree Stump Remover
updated: May 31, 2012, 2:02 PM
Hello. Does anyone know of any enviro-friendly tree stump remover
product (liquid/granules) that really works? I have large stump and don't
want to use nasty stuff or "burn" it out. Thanks.

The best, most effective, most enviro-friendly stump remover is combination of a shovel and elbow grease.

Call a tree company and have them grind out the stump with a "stump grinder." Tho the motor is not enviro-friendly, all the ground-up material is good ground cover.

If you are trying to destroy a stump, what's not to like about the "nasty stuff". That is what it is designed to do - destroy things. Agree, have it ground out or start hacking away your self with an ax, saw and clippers and eventually you will have it all dug out.

Back on the farm, we always just lit a charcoal chimney and put the red hot coals on the stump. A few times doing this and there won't be much to worry about.

Warrecker Bros Tree care did ours quick and for cheap. We used the mulch for other parts of our yard. They are fellow Dons.

No. Not bleach. It will kill all the good bacteria and fungus in the soil that do natural decomposition. But yes on the backhoe or grinder. The so-called stump remover chemicals (where you drill holes in the stump and pour in the dry chemical) are just aids in the natural decay process, they do not "kill" a stump, and are slow acting--months.

Can be done by hand, with axes and mauls.

Drill a bunch of holes in it to accelerate the natural decay process. Everything on the planet is made out of chemicals. Fear not, it is all dust to dust for all of us.

I'd hire a stump grinder. The chips are mixed in with the soil and returned to decay in the hole. If that's not cheap enough try dynamite...... quicker but more expensive in terms of collateral damage to neighbourhood and community spirit.

We used a chain and truck. Another time we used Peterson's Tree Service because they also had to dispose of it.

Plant a garden on top of it after you bring the level down to ground level. We did this a few years ago by constructing a raised bed on top of the stump, filling it with dirt, and planting a couple of artichoke plants. Within a couple to three years, the stump was completely gone.
