Iowa Battleship

Does anyone know what the route for the repositioning of the battleship Iowa will be when it moves to San
Pedro? Will it travel inside the channel or outside the islands (i.e. will it be visible from shore) ? And what
day will it be expected to pass Santa Barbara, given that it leaves Richmond this Saturday ?

According to their website (Pacific Battleship Center) the Iowa will be towed 50 miles off shore, so my guess is that they will be outside of the islands. That would make sense if they want to stay outside of normal shipping lanes. Towing has been delayed due to weather. You can track the Iowa's exact position and see real-time on-board video on that same website.

Thanks for mentioning the website. Here's a track link for any who'd like to follow the ship's progress. Hope the arrival makes the news, because it would be great to see the excitement in San Pedro Harbor.

Absolutely, 620! In fact, maybe John & Max can go up and get some great aerial images showing the the tow from S.B. to it's final destination. John? Max?

I'd love to fly out and see/snap it, and we're due for an islands flight. Has anyone seen a track map that shows the planned route? It will be further beyond the islands than I'd like to go if it's to be 50 miles from our coast. I'll certainly look for it in San Pedro if we miss this last journey. Speaking of which, the website (link above) says, "USS Iowa towed out the Golden Gate started at 2:00 pm EDT on Saturday, May 26, 2012 and is now in progress."
