Scanner Reports 5-25-12
updated: May 25, 2012, 7:05 AM

By Roger the Scanner Guy

Finally it's FRYday the weekend is upon us and it's Miller/420 Time, beach time, hiking time, enjoying life time, etc. etc. etc. Read a comment the other day about shoplifting basically telling me what to do as far as sharing my little stories. Basically, statistics or shut up. I write about things I see with my own eyes to me they speak louder than statistics which as far as I'm concerned does not prove to me whether or not something has really happened.

I worked for two major retail department stores as a store dick in the 80's here in Santa Barbara. One was in La Cumbre Plaza I caught a janitor "red handed" stealing gold chains from the jewelry department. I citizens arrested him and took him to security. He was released, I was told to leave him alone because he was a good worker. A couple years later I worked in another department store in the 1100 Block of State street I observed a woman who was about to retire stealing baby clothes, a lot of baby clothes, I told my supervisor same thing happened. I worked undercover security for a manufacturing company in Goleta because a lot of product was getting ripped off. I identified the perp turned in information and proof. I guess any other employee would have been fine but this one sold good drugs everyone liked. I'm not talking just marijuana. The jerk came after me I stood my ground and he backed off. It was scary though I got fired and got a knife pulled on me. I have known many employee thieves through the years most of them the bosses little pet.

I had a roommate that was a cashier in a liquor store he cleaned the place out. I really could not understand the mentality of people ripping off their own employers, until I got older and had a little experience being treated like dirt by a few. Still that sort of thing really wasn't for me. I just did not consider their stuff mine and we had agreed to a price when I was hired. Of course there were some employers that fed me as part of the job and let me have refreshments. Being the over indulger that I am I ate a little more and drank a little more than was intended. Although I didn't know I was doing anything wrong I was just having lunch. I would have bought my own food had I been told to do so.

Sometimes I was offered payoffs to look the other way, or when I was in the tourist industry get something for someone. Connect them for drugs or a hooker. I told those people I was a Christian and I'd pray for them they usually left me alone after that. As a young man on the streets I did illegal things to survive when I had to get money for food or my drug of choice beer. In the early 70's I was considered to be incorrigible and was sent through the Scared Straight program at Terre Haute Prison in Indiana. It scared me for about a month then I returned to my former lifestyle. I wasn't really a thief though I was a "look out guy" for a while. And I indulged in some violence to pay back old debts. This is when I was a juvenile. The only times I ever ripped off something was when I was too drunk to realize what I was doing, or when I needed to survive something, or if someone was trying to hurt me. That happened a lot to kids on the streets adults wanted sex. When I got into the 12 Steps after I came to Santa Barbara it changed me and committing crimes to survive became wrong. But having the experience of breaking the law gave me the experience to be a store dick, and to do undercover security. Just in case anyone wants to know if not don't read it. Oops, too late, ha,ha.

I'm not ashamed of my past so feel free to rub it in a little. Some people do change. I have found through the years though that those who seem to be the straightest arrow in the pack are not even close, and statistics prove nothing to me.
