Violent Felon in Custody

SANTA BARBARA, CA - May 22, 2012

On May 22, 2012 at approximately 4:45 p.m. detectives from the Santa Barbara Police Department arrested Maurice Munoz, age 24, on 500 East Canon Perdido Street. Detectives had obtained an arrest warrant for Munoz for the following felonies: domestic battery, false imprisonment, assault with a deadly weapon (knife), terrorist threats, and assault resulting in great bodily injury (loss of consciousness). Additionally, they obtained a search warrant for the residence at 532 East Canon Perdido Street where Munoz had been staying.

The crimes for which Munoz was wanted stemmed from an incident that occurred in the City of Santa Barbara on May 17, 2012. This incident is still being investigated and some witnesses have yet to be interviewed; therefore, additional details are being withheld.

Munoz is on parole and is a Lompoc gang member. This incident, however, was not gang related. At the time of his arrest the Santa Barbara Police Department's Special Weapons and Tactics Team and Crisis Negotiation Response Team were en route to 532 East Canon Perdido Street to serve the arrest and search warrants due to the violent nature of these crimes. Prior to their arrival, however, Munoz exited the residence, alone, and was taken into custody by detectives in the area.

Munoz is currently being held at the Santa Barbara Police Department.
