D'Angelo Bakery

Santa Barbara food reviews with Louie the pessimist food critic

By Louie

It is with some disappointment and a certain degree of irritation that I must conclude that my lunch this afternoon was not only satisfactory but almost bordering on perfection.  Very upsetting.

D'Angelo Bakery has become, after some renovations, a pleasant and also visually very attractive place. Our waitress was fast, courteous and also very complimentary of our order.  She said it was “awesome”. Awesome. My selection was awesome.  I really liked that.  My sandwich of mozzarella, tomatoes and sweet peppers on ciabatta was, well, awesome.  The tomatoes, juicy and bright red, were delicious and very fresh; a rarity to find this days. A dab of olive oil based dressing on the bread was just perfect to bring all of the ingredients together. The bread was outstanding - just like all the breads that D'Angelo makes.

My friend had a tuna salad sandwich. The tuna was a little crumbly, but only because it was treated so gently and not overpowered by mayonnaise. Some of the best tuna salad you can find.  Both sandwiches came with a huge salad of baby greens with a very light dressing that added to the overall taste, instead of distracting from it.  Refills of our drinks were quick and complimentary and done either by our waitress or anybody else in the crew who noticed it.  Maybe a little pricey but you could easily make two meals out of it. Portions were enormous.  All and all it was equally delicious and wonderful.  Awesome.

“I had lunch at D'Angelos restaurant and took them a copy of Louie's review. The manager was quite pleased. My lunch was great, but I wasn't impressed with our waiter- he was a bit too sarcastic for my tastes. I don't enjoy being mocked when I make a comment.  The hostess was lovely and made up for his rudeness. Anyway, it is a restaurant I would dine at again.  My thanks to Louie.”
