Trouble in IV
updated: May 08, 2012, 2:52 PM

Update from SBSO 2:40 pm

Santa Barbara Sheriff’s deputies and detectives are searching for a male who attacked a young woman behind an apartment complex in Isla Vista early this morning.

At approximately 1:25am on Tuesday, May 8, 2012 Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the 6500 block of Seville Road for a report of an attempted sexual assault.

A few minutes earlier, the female victim reportedly walked to the back of the apartment complex to put trash in the parking lot dumpster. Just as she dropped the trash into the dumpster, a male subject grabbed the victim and placed a knife against her neck.

After a brief struggle in which the suspect attempted to remove the victim’s clothes, the victim was able to break free and the suspect ran away. The victim suffered a cut on her leg which was treated at a local hospital.

The suspect is described as a white college age male, approximately 5-10, wearing a dark sweatshirt and jeans.

During the ensuing investigation, a metal pipe with PVC caps on both ends was discovered nearby. Due to its similarities to a homemade bomb, the Sheriff’s bomb squad was called. Four apartment units were evacuated until the pipe was deemed safe about two and a half hours later.

At this time, there is no evidence that links the incidents. Anyone with information is encouraged to call Sheriff’s detectives at (805) 681-4150 or the Sheriff’s Anonymous Tip Line at (805) 681-4171.
